Actor Brendan Fraser has experienced a widely publicized career renaissance in the 2020s, especially thanks to his performance in movies like 2022’s The Whale. However, there have been many who don’t know exactly why Fraser’s return to the big screen was so celebrated, but the confusion can be easily solved with one film — 1999’s The Mummy. Fraser stars in The Mummy as Rick O’ Connell, an adventurer and explorer at the turn of the 20th century. Alongside him in the cast is Rachel Weisz as Evelyn, an Egyptologist who also happens to be (unbeknownst to her) the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian Pharoah’s bride. This becomes a problem when, after thousands of years, the high priest Imhotep returns from the dead and becomes the titular Mummy.

Rick and Evelyn soon find themselves caught up in a high-flying adventure as they attempt to return Imhotep to his tomb, and with incredibly witty dialogue and great action sequences along the way, it’s easy to see why their story made for a movie that’s still beloved by fans of all ages.

There was no shortage of coming-of-age movies in the 1980s, as the subgenre seemed to be entering into its own. Few movies are as misunderstood or as hotly debated as director Richard Kelly’s 2001 sci-fi thriller Donnie Darko.
