The Goonies (1985)

The Definitive 1980s Fantasy Adventure Movie

The Goonies

When a small Oregon community is threatened by the foreclosure of their homes, a group of young misfits who called themselves the Goonies set out to find an ancient treasure in order to save the town. From a story by Steven Spielberg and a screenplay by Chris Columbus, Richard Donner’s The Goonies is one of the most iconic adventure movies of the 1980s, with a cast comprising the talents of Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano.

Release Date
June 7, 1985

Runtime
114 minutes

There is no shortage of movies on Tubi that could be considered cult classics, though few can boast being an integral part of as many childhoods as The Goonies. Directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies is perhaps the quintessential 1980s fantasy-adventure movie, and is considered by many to be the perfect example of a film that deftly blends action, adventure, fantasy, and comedy.

The plot of The Goonies sees a group of young friends gathering for one final weekend before their entire neighborhood is foreclosed, and they’re all forced to move away. However, on their final adventure, they discover an ancient coin and corresponding treasure map. The group then goes off in search of the treasure, believing it could be the key to saving their homes. What follows is an adventure that involves pirates, treasure, and many coming-of-age subplots that remain just as beloved by fans now as they were in the mid 1980s when The Goonies first released.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

The Slick Spy Movie From The Director Of John Wick And Deadpool 2

Atomic Blonde Movie Poster

Atomic Blonde

Based on a graphic novel, Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent who is attempting to locate a sensitive list of double agent spies before it is smuggled from East to West Germany, just before the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Theron is joined by a cast that includes James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, and John Goodman.

Director
David Leitch

Release Date
July 26, 2017

Runtime
115 minutes

Director David Leitch has many high-quality action movies to his name, including being one half of the team that directed John Wick, and leading the creation of Deadpool 2, Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, and 2022’s star-studded Bullet Train. However, one lesser-known title that has a strong following is 2017’s Atomic Blonde, which is currently one of the best action movies on Tubi (and arguably the slickest).

Set in Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Atomic Blonde is a high-octane story of espionage, political intrigue, and double-agents working for both MI6 and the KGB. It’s an incredibly stylish movie that will appeal greatly to fans of any of Leitch’s other films (especially John Wick, to the point that the director has discussed a potential crossover). The cast also includes the likes of Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and John Goodman, who all give incredibly solid performances throughout.

The Mummy (1999)

The Adventure Movie That Put Brendan Fraser On The Map

The Mummy 1999 Poster

The Mummy (1999)

The Mummy (1999) is an action/adventure/fantasy film directed by Stephen Sommers that stars Brendan Fraser as the dashing Rick O’Connell, an adventurer who always manages to get into trouble. Back in 1290 BC, Imhotep killed Pharaoh Seti I with the help of his wife, Anck-Su-Namun, and the two of them died with the promise to reunite in the future. Fast forward to the 1900s, siblings Jonathan and Evelyn acquire a map that will lead them to the lost city of Hamunaptra. Rick, wanting his map back, cuts a deal with them, agreeing to travel together for the promise of untold treasures. However, Hamunaptra is where Imhotep is and accidentally resurrects the now ancient mummified priest, who seeks to restore his body and revive his lost love. Rick, Jonathan, and Evelyn will have to battle with ancient mummies, death traps, and more to stop the return of Imhotep.

Director
Stephen Sommers

Release Date
May 7, 1999

Runtime
125 minutes

Actor Brendan Fraser has experienced a widely publicized career renaissance in the 2020s, especially thanks to his performance in movies like 2022’s The Whale. However, there have been many who don’t know exactly why Fraser’s return to the big screen was so celebrated, but the confusion can be easily solved with one film — 1999’s The Mummy. The Mummy is easily one of the best lighthearted action movies currently on Tubi, and despite releasing over two decades ago, still holds up as an incredibly enjoyable watch.

Fraser stars in The Mummy as Rick O’ Connell, an adventurer and explorer at the turn of the 20th century. Alongside him in the cast is Rachel Weisz as Evelyn, an Egyptologist who also happens to be (unbeknownst to her) the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian Pharoah’s bride. This becomes a problem when, after thousands of years, the high priest Imhotep returns from the dead and becomes the titular Mummy.

Rick and Evelyn soon find themselves caught up in a high-flying adventure as they attempt to return Imhotep to his tomb, and with incredibly witty dialogue and great action sequences along the way, it’s easy to see why their story made for a movie that’s still beloved by fans of all ages.

Dark City (1998)

The Bizarre Neo-Noir Sci-Fi Thriller

dark city

Dark City

Dark City is a 1998 neo-noir science fiction film directed by Alex Proyas. The movie stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jennifer Connelly. It follows John Murdoch, who wakes up with no memory in a dystopian world controlled by mysterious beings known as “The Strangers.” As he pieces together his identity, he discovers unsettling truths about the city’s perpetual darkness and its inhabitants’ manipulated realities.

Director
Alex Proyas

Release Date
February 27, 1998

Runtime
100 minutes

Tubi hosts a wide range of sci-fi movies from across the decades, though few can claim to be as unique (or, indeed, bizarre) as 1998’s Dark City. This neo-noir thriller comes from the mind of director Alex Proyas, and has an incredibly unique premise. Dark City focuses on John Murdoch, a man suffering from amnesia who attempts to piece together his missing memories. However, upon investigating the circumstances behind his memory loss, he realizes his reality (and that of all those around him) is nothing like it appears.

Murdoch learns that, every night, the residents of his city freeze and are rearranged by a mysterious group known as “the Strangers”. They awaken every day in new lives and with a totally new set of memories, completely unaware that everything they think they know is false. As Murdoch starts to unravel the mystery of the Strangers, he soon comes to learn that he doesn’t live on 20th century Earth as he and everyone he knows believes. It’s a strange blend of movies like The Truman Show and The Matrix, and also one that Tubi users aren’t likely to forget in a hurry.

IT (2017)

The Terrifying Stephen King Adaptation

It (2017)

It Chapter One is a supernatural horror film based on the book by Stephen King where several children, including the younger brother of one of the film’s protagonists, have gone missing. A group of kids called “The Loser’s Club” decide to investigate the cause and hopefully save the others. However, they realize they may be in over their head when they discover their foe is an evil clown known as Pennywise, a being that preys on fear and has been the rumored cause of murders in the town of Derry for centuries.

Director
Andy Muschietti

Release Date
September 8, 2017

Runtime
135 Minutes

Stephen King is a name synonymous with horror, and adaptations of his stories have stood out among the best horror movies of the last several decades. This trend hasn’t slowed during the 2010s and 2020s, and one of the best Stephen King adaptations of all time is currently available on Tubi — 2017’s IT. IT makes for truly terrifying viewing, especially for Tubi users who have a fear of clowns. The story focuses on the town of Derry which, every 27 years, plays host to a demonic entity that devours children.

This being takes the form of a horrific murderous clown named Pennywise (though it takes on various, equally harrowing, shapes throughout). IT is easily one of Stephen King’s most popular novels, and director Andy Muschietti did a phenomenal job of translating it to the big screen for the 2017 adaptation. The movie was highly praised by critics, both for its direction, the heart-pounding scares throughout, and the performances of both the young cast members and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise.

Predator (1987)

The Classic Schwarzenegger Sci-Fi Action Movie

Predator

Predator (1987)

A group of soldiers in the Central American jungle are pursued by an alien warrior.

Release Date
June 12, 1987

Cast
Arnold Schwarzenegger , Carl Weathers , Elpidia Carrillo , Bill Duke , Jesse Ventura , Shane Black , Sonny Landham , Richard Chaves

Runtime
107 Minutes

The Predator franchise is one of the most recognizable action sci-fi movie series of the last few decades, as well as being a highlight of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career for taking the leading role in the 1987 original, which is now available to stream on Tubi. 1987’s Predator comes from director John McTiernan, also known for the likes of Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and The 13th Warrior. While some of the special effects may be a little dated by the 2020s, Predator still stands out as an incredibly solid action movie.

The plot of Predator sees Schwarzenegger’s Alan “Dutch” Schaefer and his squad being stalked through a jungle in Latin America by a terrifying extra-terrestrial hunter with access to a shocking array of futuristic weapons. Best thought of as Alien meets Rambo, Predator has all the hallmarks of the action and sci-fi movies of the 1980s, and it’s clear to see why its legacy lives strong and has spawned a franchise that continues to be successful to this day.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

The Gangster Movie With An Unrivaled Twist

The Usual Suspects

Written by Christopher McQuarrie and directed by Bryan Singer, The Usual Suspects is a Mystery film that features Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, and Benicio del Toro. The plot unfolds during an interrogation in which a con man speaks to investigators about what happened, being one of only two men that survived a massacre at the Port of Los Angeles.

Director
Bryan Singer

Release Date
August 16, 1995

Runtime
106 minutes

Gangster films have been a staple of cinema for decades, and while it may not have the mainstream recognition of the likes of The Godfather or Scarface, 1995’s The Usual Suspects is inarguably one of the best titles in both the wider genre and among the crime movies currently available on Tubi. The Usual Suspects was directed by Bryan Singer and stars the likes of Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, and Kevin Pollak. The five play a group of unrelated criminals (the titular suspects) who find themselves thrown together after first meeting in a shared police lineup.

The plot of
The Usual Suspects
ends up running far deeper than most gangster movies, and — thanks to the mystery of the identity of the feared mobster Keyser Söze — has one of the best twist endings in cinematic history.

From there, the group decides to team up for a heist to get revenge on the NYPD, each taking chagrin with the fact they were accused of being part of a hijacking they had no involvement in. However, the plot of The Usual Suspects ends up running far deeper than most gangster movies, and — thanks to the mystery of the identity of the feared mobster Keyser Söze — has one of the best twist endings in cinematic history.

St. Elmo’s Fire (1985)

The Cult Classic Brat Pack Coming-Of-Age Movie

St Elmos Fire Movie Poster

St. Elmo’s Fire

A group of close-knit college graduates navigates the challenges of adulthood, balancing careers, relationships, and personal growth. Amidst the backdrop of their favorite bar, they confront their fears, ambitions, and the complexities of growing up, discovering the true meaning of friendship and resilience.

Director
Joel Schumacher

Release Date
June 28, 1985

Writers
Joel Schumacher , Carl Kurlander

Cast
Rob Lowe , Demi Moore , Emilio Estevez , Ally Sheedy , Judd Nelson , Mare Winningham , Andrew McCarthy , Martin Balsam , Andie MacDowell

Runtime
110 Minutes

There was no shortage of coming-of-age movies in the 1980s, as the subgenre seemed to be entering into its own. Among teen films about the trials of entering adulthood that still stands up today is 1985’s St Elmo’s Fire, the drama from director Joel Schumacher starring decade-legends like Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, and Rob Lowe. While St Elmo’s Fire was initially panned by critics, it has since gone on to achieve cult status, with the same criticisms about its script and (at times) incredibly vacuous characters becoming the reasons that it’s so beloved by its fans.

The plot of St. Elmo’s Fire is relatively straightforward, as it focuses on a group of recent college graduates trying to make their way in the world after finally leaving the education system. However, the charm of St. Elmo’s Fire isn’t in its plot so much but in its characters, with the likes of Emilio Estevez’s Kirby and Demi Moore’s party-girl Jules being hilariously two-dimensional yet still, somehow, near-impossible not to find endearing.

Donnie Darko (2001)

The Cerebral And Highly Debated Psychological Thriller

Donnie Darko

After troubled teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes on a local golf course after a night of sleepwalking, he has a vision of a man in a rabbit suit telling him that the world will end in 28 days. Returning home, Donnie sees that a jet engine has fallen on his bedroom in the night, and begins to feel increasingly detached from reality. Scrambling to make sense of the bizarre and unexplainable events that have altered his life, Donnie finds himself unravelling a tangled web of disaster and fate.

Director
Richard Kelly

Release Date
October 26, 2001

Writers
Richard Kelly

Cast
Jake Gyllenhaal , Holmes Osborne , Maggie Gyllenhaal , Daveigh Chase , Mary McDonnell , James Duval

Runtime
113 minutes

Few movies are as misunderstood or as hotly debated as director Richard Kelly’s 2001 sci-fi thriller Donnie Darko. So ambiguous is the plot that there are even disagreements on what Donnie Darko is even about, though this only serves to make the movie even more endearing (and one that definitely counts among the “must watch” titles on Tubi). The story focuses on titular troubled teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young man who finds himself consistently at odds with the 1988 suburban community he and his family reside in.

Donnie’s psychological problems cause him to have visions of a man in a grotesque bunny costume who he knows of Frank, who constantly forewarns him about the end of the world. However, when Donnie escapes death by following a vision of Frank to a golf course on the night a jet engine crashes through the ceiling of their family home, Donnie realizes his “visions” may be more prophetic than first appears. Notably, Jake Gyllenhaal’s real-life sibling Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie’s sister Elizabeth, and the pair manage to bring plenty of their shared dynamic to the arguments between the two characters.

Terrifier (2016)

The Feature-Length Debut Of Art The Clown

Terrifier Poster

Terrifier

Terrifier is a horror-slasher movie that follows two sisters that hop between parties on Halloween night, hunted relentlessly by a sadistic serial killer known as Art the Clown. Art, who has been slowly building his body count and terrorizing the town, finds a girl he becomes infatuated with, beginning a long string of victims for anyone who either stands in his way or is at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Director
Damien Leone

Release Date
March 15, 2018

Writers
Damien Leone

Cast
David Howard Thornton , Jenna Kanell , Samantha Scaffidi , Catherine Corcoran

Runtime
86 Minutes

Director Damien Leone reinvigorated the slasher horror subgenre in 2022 with the sleeper-hit Terrifier 2, which gained notoriety thanks to some of its incredibly brutal scenes. With Terrifier 3 on the way in 2024 and already creating no shortage of conversation, many uninitiated with the villainous antagonist Art the Clown are wondering where the franchise began — and Tubi is one of the best places to catch up thanks to 2016’s Terrifier currently being available to stream on the platform.

It’s a slasher movie that pulls no punches, and Leone’s career history as a practical effects wizard prior to taking the director’s chair is evident throughout.

The plot of Terrifier sees various characters stalked and murdered by the truly diabolical silent killer Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton), a character Leone first debuted in his 2008 short movie The 9th Circle. 2016’s Terrifier is a far grittier and lower-budget movie than Terrifier 2, though it’s quickly gaining its own fanbase thanks to the prominence of the sequel.

It’s a slasher movie on Tubi that pulls no punches, and Leone’s career history as a practical effects wizard prior to taking the director’s chair is evident throughout. While not hugely critically acclaimed upon its release, Terrifier is quickly defining its own legacy years later thanks both to the success of its sequel and its many brutal kills appearing in horror-fandom circles on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
