10 ‘Fosse/Verdon’ (2019)
Starring Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams
For people who just love musicals, Broadway, and its history, Fosse/Verdon may be a great choice. There are musical numbers throughout, and the series was critically acclaimed and well-awarded when it came out. It follows the love story of real-life Broadway legends Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. It stars Sam Rockwell, Michelle Williams, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also has a musical number in one of the final episodes.
Wicked was originally a Broadway musical, so watching a show about Broadway and its inner workings could be interesting to folks who are only now discovering more about musical theater and its relentless appeal. Bob Fosse directed the musical movie Cabaret with Liza Minnelli and created and directed the highly acclaimed musical Chicago. Gwen Verdon was a dancer and Broadway performer with four Tony awards for musical comedy performances; the series, Fosse/Verdon, follows their relationship and shows their contributions to the entertainment industry, specifically Broadway.
Starring Jane Levy and Skylar Astin
Another series set in modern times, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is a wonderful addition to the world of musicals. The protagonist, Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy), is a software developer dealing with daily issues like health, work, and romance. When Zoey undergoes an MRI, an earthquake happens while she’s in the machine; this alters her brain chemistry so that she can hear people’s private thoughts in the form of song. Zoey is now able to connect with people a lot more, though she’s the only one who hears people sing and sees them dance.
Fans of musicals will surely like Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist; this jukebox musical has all the cuteness and quirkiness of a comedy combined with extraordinary singers with stellar voices and acting chops. Jane Levy is a wonderful lead, and fans of Wicked will enjoy her as a charming and relatable female protagonist. The show also features singer-actors like Skylar Astin and Bernadette Peters.

8 ‘Charmed’ (1998-2006)
Starring Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano
Charmed is a famous series that marked the early 2000s and the growing-up period of many Millennials today. The story of the three Halliwell sisters with magical powers made viewers take sides, cheer for the characters individually and together, and pledge loyalty to various witches, angels, demons, and other supernatural creatures. While the show has been most known for the feud between Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano, fans loved watching nearly 200 episodes about the witch sisters and their claim to magical royalty.
The main storyline in Charmed follows three sisters living together: Prue (Shannen Doherty), a telekinetic master; Piper (Holly Marie Combs), a witch with an ability to freeze people and her environment; and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), with the premonition ability. The three sisters can join their powers and use them as the ultimate weapon, called The Power of Three. The series follows their adventures with supernatural good and bad guys, and some human ones, too. Fans of Wicked and witchy themes will enjoy Charmed.
7 ‘Shadow and Bone’ (2021-2023)
Starring Jessie Mei Li and Ben Barnes
Netflix has an array of fantasy shows, and Shadow and Bone is one of the more successful attempts at adapting a beloved fantasy novel. Shadow and Bone has Alina Starkov as the lead, a young woman whose destiny is written long before she has the right to choose. She belongs to a divided nation called Ravka, home to Alina and many magic practitioners called Grisha. When the legend of a Sun Summonerāthe only person who could unite Ravkaābecomes central, it’s revealed that Alina is that person.
Battling with her identity, coming to terms with the things people want from her, and understanding herself beyond her predestined role is the dominant theme of Alina Starkov’s character. Through unfolding events in Shadow and Bone , she grows more confident and accepting of herself. These themes are similarly interpreted in Wicked, especially with Elphaba’s struggle to find a place where she can fully belong. Shadow and Bone had two seasons but was canceled in November 2023.
6 ‘Sleepy Hollow’ (2013-2017)
Starring Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie
Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci is a beloved fantasy horror. The TV show with the same name is a rendition of the movie (and both are short story adaptations), with Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) awakening 200 years in the future, in 2013. He meets a police detective, Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), and the two embark on a journey to find the Headless Horseman, who is actually Death, and stop his search for his severed head. If the Horseman finds his head, he’ll cause an apocalypse; the mission for the now displaced Crane and the brave Abbie is to stop the Horseman.
As much as Oz is a magical fantasy land, Sleepy Hollow is set in the real world, but its magic is still apparent. Similarly to Charmed, it has some magical creatures, demons, and witch business, with the charming and adamant Ichabod Crane as the protagonist completing the fantasy vibes. The show has four seasons and 62 episodes, so there’s enough material to get comfort in after Wicked.
5 ‘Agatha All Along’ (2024)
Starring Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza
The latest Marvel and Disney series, Agatha All Along, is a spin-off of the widely acclaimed show Wandavision, which introduced people to Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), a witch similar to Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch. Since Agatha’s lore was hidden all over Wandavision, the spin-off was likely planned from the start; Kathryn Hahn’s fantastic performance in which she blends comedy and drama was surely another factor in greenlighting Agatha All Along.
The story follows Agatha after breaking from Wanda’s spell in Wandavision. Three years later, Agatha forms a new coven with a teenage boy who wants to go on the adventure known as The Witches’ Road. This can help him go through the rite of passage and give Agatha back her power, so she agrees. But it’s not an easy road to take, and Agatha struggles with herself and the adversaries trying to stop her. Kathryn Hahn is joined by some iconic faces, from Aubrey Plaza to Patti LuPone and Debra Jo Rupp; the show is an adventure filled with moments of self-discovery, just like Wicked.

4 ‘Once Upon a Time’ (2011-2018)
Starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison
The beloved series Once Upon a Time is one of the longest-lasting network fantasy series, and it was watched by audiences of all ages. It was a beautiful blend of fantasy, drama, romance, and action, with famous fairytale princesses and princes working together as live-action characters and fantastical counterparts of real people. The show has optimism and hope at its core, which was seemingly what its creators wanted it to be with each episode.
The story follows Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), who moves to a town called Storybrooke in Maine with her son, Henry (Andrew J. West), to escape her troubled past. All of Storybrooke’s residents are actually fairytale characters who were transported from a parallel, fantasy universe into the world as we know it; these characters’ memories were also completely wiped, so many of them don’t even know who they really are. As the story progresses, the characters fight for themselves, learn who they are, and tackle self-acceptance. Once Upon a Time is one of the best ways to continue the enjoyment of a well-known fantasy world after seeing Wicked.

3 ‘The Wheel of Time’ (2021-)
Starring Rosamund Pike and Daniel Henney
The Wheel of Time series wasn’t that well accepted by the novel series’ fans, but for anyone who hasn’t read the Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson series, the show carries a lot of the novels’ lore and is generally faithful to their storylines. The Wheel of Time is a high fantasy story about magical channelers who have the ability to summon the One Power. The protagonist, Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), is one of the female-only channelers of the One Power, whose order is called the Aes Sedai.
Moiraine and the Aes Sedai are keeping a legend about a male channeler, a reincarnation of a former channeler known as the Dragon. With several “suspects,” Moiraine embarks on a journey to find and recruit them to defeat a primordial evil that threatens the world across all episodes. Rosamund Pike is a thrilling lead; her charm and beauty suit the high fantasy world of The Wheel of Time and contribute to the show’s success. The supernatural, high-fantasy world where characters discover their true selves is a decent post-Wicked watch.
2 ‘A Discovery of Witches’ (2018-2022)
Starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode
A Discovery of Witches was an interesting supernatural series because it defied the standards of common witch tropes. The show starts off slowly, with Teresa Palmer portraying Diana, a witch by birth who’s reluctant to use her powers. After her discovery of a bewitched book in the Oxford library, where she studies, she must make peace with her identity, accept her witchy parts, and embrace the change.
When Diana decides to discover more about the magical world of witches, she is offered help by the mysterious biochemistry professor Matthew (Matthew Goode). The chemistry between them is palpable, and their fates were obviously meant to intertwine, but Matthew’s real identity is an obstacle to their love. The gorgeous world-building is one of the reasons for the show’s success, as most of the scenery was filmed in the magical landscapes of Wales. Combined with gothic buildings, magical influences, and a great story, A Discovery of Witches provides a more serious note that follows the one of Wicked.

1 ‘Emerald City’ (2016-2017)
Starring Adria Arjona and Oliver Jackson-Cohen
What’s better to tie in with Wicked, set in the universe of Frank L. Baum‘s The Wizard of Oz, than an actual rendition of The Wizard of Oz? A more adult version of the story, called Emerald City, follows Adria Arjona as Dorothy Gale when she accidentally kills the Witch of the East and is trapped in Oz to suffer the consequences of her actions. While her appearance fulfills an awaited prophecy in the Land of Oz, Dorothy’s only goal is to go back home. She must find the Wizard (Vincent D’Onofrio), who can help her with returning, and is accompanied by Lucas (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), a man on a mission of his own.
Emerald City was a successful miniseries that provided a darker twist to The Wizard of Oz storyline. Adria Arjona is a great lead as Dorothy, while the witches of the West, East, and North are all ethereal, powerful, and sometimes terrifying. Oz is depicted as a land with various conflicting tribes and populations, and much of the show’s atmosphere is dark. While this is the reason Emerald City may not fully complement Wicked, it would be a shame to miss a different interpretation of the same characters and enjoy seeing something new.
Wicked is currently playing in theaters.
