One cult classic horror movie that’s approaching its 15th anniversary has been revived. News broke this afternoon that a Grave Encounters (2011) reboot is in the works, with Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard) set to star and Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) producing. After writing and directing the original Grave Encounters movie, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz are also coming back to help develop the sequel. They will produce, but it remains unclear if they will return to the director’s chair. No word on when production will start or when the film will be released.
Released in 2011, the first Grave Encounters movie didn’t light the world on fire, but it has become a cult classic in the years since its release. The found footage horror film earned scores of 63% from critics and 49% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed around $4 million on a shoestring budget of only $100,000. The original film did well enough to warrant the greenlighting of a sequel, Grave Encounters 2, which failed to capture the same magic as its predecessor. It grossed less at the box office on a much higher budget.
Justin Long has become a horror icon in recent years, so if anyone can recreate the magic of the original Grave Encounters movie, it’s him. In 2022, Long teamed up with director Zach Cregger for Barbarian, the horror film starring Bill Skarsgård that was recently booted off Netflix. He reunited with Cregger earlier this year for Weapons, another horror hit starring Josh Brolin that has found massive success at the box office. Long is also famous for his roles in Jeepers Creepers (2001) and Galaxy Quest (1999).
Are the ‘Grave Encounters’ Movies on Streaming?
Although the first Grave Encounters movie is absent from any major streaming services like Netflix or Prime Video, it is streaming for free on Pluto TV, the Roku Channel, and Tubi. Its despised sequel is also streaming for free on all three of the same services. Now that news of a reboot is out in the open, it wouldn’t be surprising for one of the major streamers to grab the rights to air the Grave Encounters movies for a month or two. It’s especially worth keeping an eye on if a studio with its own streaming service acquires the rights to distribute the reboot.
