Jennifer said, “We talked about how we were gonna do this [scene] over and over again. I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way. And really, her character was very much like her, and my character at the time was very much like me. I was so afraid of her, and she was so brazen, and like, ‘Just hit me! Don’t worry about it! It’s gonna be fine!’ I was like, ‘No, I don’t wanna hurt you!’ And she was like, ‘Let’s just go! Just got for it!’
And so, I was like, ‘I’m gonna poke you,’ and I do, like this little poke. And she kinda hits me back, and then she pokes me back. And then the next thing you know, she really went for it on one of those slaps…We said, ‘Let’s just keep slapping each other until we stop.’ The scene took on a life of its own in a way that we never imagined. I don’t even think we were supposed to slap each other.
I just remember afterwards, Jane had a blood blister at the top of her eye. My nail, like, went up into her eye. I was mortified. I was mortified. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry.’ And she was like, ‘It’s fine. It’s fine…” And she didn’t care. She’s such a gangster bitch. I just love her.”
