888-Page Tomb Raider Comic Collection Gets Colossal Discount, Releases Next Week

Dark Horse’s revival of the classic Tomb Raider comic book series kicks off next week with Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Volume 1. Fans who haven’t preordered a copy of the massive 888-page hardcover can get a terrific discount at Amazon. The retailer has slashed the price of Volume 1 to only $78.57 (was $100) ahead of its July 1 publication. If you already preordered a copy at the full $100 MSRP, Amazon will automatically adjust your total to reflect the best deal offered until your order ships.

Tomb Raider was originally published by Top Cow Productions from 1999 to 2005. Volume 1 of the reissued comic book series includes most of the issues in that first series. To read the (almost) entire arc as well as a Tomb Raider miniseries and a handful of one-shots, you’ll want to preorder Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Volume 2. The 944-page hardcover is selling for its full $100 list price, but Amazon’s preorder price guarantee allows you to get any future discounts between now and Volume 2’s November 25 release.

$78.57 (was $100) | Releases July 1

Top Cow’s Tomb Raider comics have long been out of print, and the older “Archive” editions fetch an astronomical sum on the reseller market, often going for hundreds of dollars each.

Volume 1 compiles 33 issues, each of which is roughly 25 pages. Here’s what’s included:

  • Tomb Raider: The Series – No. 1-24 and 26-34

In case you’re wondering, No. 25 saw Lara Croft team up with Witchblade, another Top Cow comic at the time. It appears that Dark Horse wasn’t able to secure the licensing rights from Image Comics, the owner of the Witchblade IP.

$100 | Releases November 25

Volume 2 of Dark Horse’s Tomb Raider Colossal Collection wraps up Lara Croft’s long-running comic book series with No. 35-50 and two prequel comics.

After you finish reading Tomb Raider: The Series, you can dive into the Tomb Raider: Journeys miniseries. Volume 2 of the Colossal Collection includes all 12 issues of Journeys that Top Cow published from 2001 to 2003.

Though Volume 2 of the Colossal Collection has a smaller portion of the mainline series, it’s actually a thicker book thanks to the Journey miniseries and five one-shots. A few of the one-shots are essentially two issues in one; The Greatest Treasure of All (2005) and Arabian Nights (2004) are 48 pages each.

Here’s a full list of what’s included in the 944-page hardcover book:

  • Tomb Raider: The Series – No. 0, 1/2, and 35-50
  • Tomb Raider: Journeys – No. 1-12
  • Tomb Raider one-shots:
    • The Greatest Treasure of All (48 pages)
    • Arabian Nights (48 pages)
    • Origins (24 pages)
    • Takeover (36 pages)
    • Epiphany (40 pages)

Top Cow’s Tomb Raider comics released when the franchise was in its heyday, so they were quite popular at the time. The comics are set in the same continuity as the games developed by Core Design, making a few tweaks to Lara Croft’s story along the way. A talented roster of artists and writers were involved in this series, including Dan Jurgens, Adam Hughes, Michael Turner, Andy Park, Marc Silvestri, David Finch, and several others.

Multiple Tomb Raider comic books and graphic novels have been published since the first series concluded in 2005. Sadly, all of the other Tomb Raider comics are out of print today. You can, however, still get the official tie-in novel for Shadow of the Tomb Raider dubbed Path of the Apocalypse. The well-received 320-page novel was published by Titan Books in 2018 and is available in paperback for $15.

The Colossal Collection isn’t the only throwback release for Tomb Raider fans to look forward to this year. The physical edition of Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is slated to launch September 19. Just like Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, the collection is getting a budget-friendly Deluxe Edition with a steelbook case, 150-page exploration book, and more.
