On February 6, 2025, Virginia Halas McCaskey’s death was confirmed by her family in an official statement. They expressed their grief while also celebrating her long and meaningful life.
Her family stated, “While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth. She guided the Bears for four decades and based every business decision on what was best for Bears players, coaches, staff and fans.” (via NBC News)
Following the news of her passing, the Chicago Bears paid tribute on their official X (formerly Twitter) account. Virginia, who led the team for a long time, took over her father George Halas on October 31, 1983. Furthermore, her husband Ed McCaskey, assumed the position of chairman. After he passed, Virginia passed the role of Chairman to her eldest Michael McCaskey and in 2011 her other son George McCaskey succeeded Michael.
Her obituary, published on Dignity Memorial, provided details about the upcoming visitation and funeral services. According to the announcement, visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Oehler Funeral Home in Des Plaines. The funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at St. Emily Catholic Church in Mount Prospect.
As the football world mourns McCaskey’s death, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also shared his condolences. He said, “Virginia Halas McCaskey, the matriarch of the Chicago Bears and daughter of George Halas, the founder of the NFL, leaves a legacy of class, dignity and humanity.” (via NFL)
