Are The Defenders officially back? Producer Brad Winderbaum teases that Marvel may bring other Netflix heroes into the MCU alongside Daredevil.
The Defenders was a weird era in Marvel’s history. The MCU was firing on all cylinders, and fans were excited to see the separate branches of their universe slowly come together with the Infinity Saga. This included the franchise’s Netflix shows, which included Daredevil, The Punisher, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. At the time, there was speculation that many of these heroes might appear in Captain America: Civil War, or even Avengers: Infinity War.
A series of very odd business decisions, legal rights and fan demand resulted in The Defenders, a crossover between all of Marvel’s Netflix shows seemingly entirely divorced from the MCU. While the series was fun, including some interesting character interactions and a genuinely good performance from Finn Jones as Iron Fist, it didn’t amount to much aside from serving as a season 2.5 for Daredevil leading into the character’s final outing.
Will The Defenders Return In The MCU?
Yet with Daredevil finally making his way into the MCU with projects like Daredevil: Born Again, fans have been left wondering if the rest of The Defenders cast might be brought into the fold as well. Surprisingly, it seems odds are better than not. When speaking on the idea, longtime Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum revealed that the studio was actively exploring bringing some of the iconic characters back into the fold.
“I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you that it’s so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum explained to Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It’s dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television.”
“But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring…Who knows what the future brings? Once we arc out here, there’s obviously any number of stories that we’d want to revisit or pull from the comics that involve Elektra or the Hand or any part of the Daredevil mythos.”
Of course, this is far from confirmation that any of The Defenders will actually return. There’s been rumors about characters like Jessica Jones joining Daredevil in the MCU from the day Matt Murdock made the jump from Netflix. Though given Marvel’s current quagmire of characters, it may be a few years before any concrete statements are made and productions ramp up.
Daredevil: Born Again will release in March 4, 2025 on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
