Ryan Reynolds is developing a new Deadpool project — but this time, he’s bringing the X-Men along.
Following the unprecedented success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds made it clear that he had no interest in doing another solo Deadpool film in the near future. Even with the movie earning $1.338 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated release of all time, Reynolds appeared to view the project as a creative capstone rather than a springboard for more of the same.
Now, nearly a year after Deadpool & Wolverine’s box office triumph, Reynolds is preparing to revisit the Merc with a Mouth — but not in a leading role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds is developing a new concept that would pair Deadpool with a group of X-Men characters in what could be his first proper team-up movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadpool Could Step Aside to Let the X-Men Shine
The trade claims that Reynolds is working on various early treatments that would focus on three to four X-Men characters, with Deadpool serving in a supporting role. This proposed ensemble movie would be separate from Marvel’s in-development X-Men reboot, which is currently being written by The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie.
The team-up idea remains in its early stages and has not yet been formally developed with Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios. Reynolds is known for workshopping concepts before officially collaborating with the studio. While no timeline or commitments are in place yet, Reynolds’ desire to evolve the character in a new context — and share the screen with more X-Men — suggests the Merc with a Mouth isn’t done just yet, even if the days of solo outings are behind him… for now.
