Superman director James Gunn recently explained what qualifies a character as a metahuman in the DC Universe during a discussion on Threads. While replying to fans, he shared a broad definition that covers everything from alien origins to technological enhancements. His remarks come as DC Studios builds the foundation for its new cinematic universe ahead of Superman’s July release.
Responding to a fan on Threads, James Gunn explained, “In DC Comics, a metahuman is a human-like being with extraordinary, often paranormal, abilities. These powers can arise from a variety of sources, including science, magic, alien origins, mutation, divinity, proficiency, or technology.” He added that while Robot #4 is likely not a metahuman, “[Mr.] Terrific arguably is,” and noted, “Krypto is meta but I won’t say he’s not human because he might read this.”
In the context of Superman, Gunn used the term “our metahumans” while unveiling character posters for the film a few days ago. He includes characters like Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Krypto under this label. His definition allows for abilities gained through training, intellect, or technology, not just innate powers or mutations.
This differs from Marvel’s mutants, who possess the X-gene and develop powers through genetic mutation, usually during puberty. Mutants are a separate subspecies of humans and do not include those who rely on tools or skills alone.
Gunn’s inclusion of “proficiency” as a qualifier broadens the metahuman category. Highly skilled individuals like Batman or Peacemaker may fall under this definition. Unlike Marvel’s stricter mutant concept, it seems the DCU uses a more flexible approach to classify power.
Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock, with supporting roles from Wendell Pierce and Frank Grillo.
