“A riveting psychological and emotional thriller.” Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a snow survival thriller titled Dead of Winter, also listed as The Dead of Winter, from director Brian Kirk as his third feature. This is actually premiering at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival underway right now in Switzerland, and it will hit theaters later in September for anyone interested. A grief-stricken loner is caught in a brutal Minnesotan blizzard, where she discovers a young woman imprisoned by a desperate armed couple, forcing this unlikely hero into a dangerous fight for her and the victim’s survival. Reminds me of Fargo, of course. Starring Emma Thompson, Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, & Gaia Wise, with Cuan Hosty-Blaney, Dalton Leeb, Paul Hamilton, Lloyd Hutchinson, and Brian F. O’Byrne. The director also adds: “The Dead of Winter is a merciless kidnap thriller, set in the epic snowbound wilderness of northern Minnesota, with a beautiful love story at its heart.” This looks like an intense new thriller to cool off with this summer.

Hit by a blizzard, a grief-stricken loner (Emma Thompson) gets lost among backroads near a Minnesotan lake and stops for help at a remote cabin in the woods. In there she discovers a young woman (Laurel Marsden) kidnapped by a desperate couple (Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca) who are armed and intent on murder. Isolated and without any cell service, this unlikely hero realizes she is the woman’s only hope of survival. Dead of Winter is directed by Irish filmmaker Brian Kirk, director of the films Middletown and 21 Bridges previously, as well as TV episodes for “Game of Thrones” and “Penny Dreadful”. The screenplay is written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson & Dalton Leeb. It’s produced by Greg Silverman, Jon Berg, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo. The film just premiered at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival this month. Vertical will release Kirk’s Dead of Winter film in select US theaters starting September 26th, 2025 coming soon.
