The entertainment giant made a significant announcement that is shaking up the comic book industry. Marvel Studios has said they will create a physical version of the famous Baxter Building through The Fantastic Four: First Steps Immersive Pop-Up Experience at New York Comic Con. This will be one of the main tangible activities for the eagerly awaited movie remaking.
The Hudson Mercantile site, which is merely two blocks from the main convention center, is the location of the experience and offers comic book fans an amazing opportunity to walk through the wonderful yet real Baxter Building with all its famous legends. The pop-up starts on the NYCC opening dates, October 10-11, and will be open all day from 10 AM to 6 PM. However, the installation will welcome visitors for shorter hours, from 10 AM to 2 PM, on October 12. To make it even better, the attendees are not required to buy tickets for Comic Con in order to access the pop-up, thus, it is quite open to the fan community.
The timing is fortuitously aligned with the film’s video-on-demand release strategy. The Fantastic Four will be available for online purchase at the same time as the Blu-ray copies will be released on October 14. This coordinated release offers different chances for the fans to engage with the title.
The public’s reaction has been very positive, and a lot of people expressed their mixed feelings of excitement and disappointment about not being able to attend the event in person. A fan simply said, ‘Seriously amazing! FOMO for real!’ and indeed, that comment seemed to resonate with a lot of other followers who would love to be there but are not able to.
Moreover, another user talked about the novel convention experiences and the user said, ‘Woah…..One of these days I need to go to ComicCon..’ This signifies the longing of many fans like this one who would like to go to pop culture events but have not yet taken the trip.
The kitchen set was particularly captivating to one guest, and she said, ‘Ohhhh I wanna stand in that kitchen so bad’ – marvel’s spotlight on the household aspects within the super-hero headquarters seems to be doing the trick with regards to the audience’s attraction.
Several people who have already visited the event have communicated their opinions about it. One of the earliest visitors remarked that the experience was ‘so cute!!’ with a milkshake emoji, implying that she considered the world of the Fantastic Four to be warm and nostalgic.
The pop-up has even led to the formulation of one-a-great cosplay, with the comic fan saying, ‘This Valeria Von Doom will need to stop by with Daddy Doom on Sunday after the Marvel kids meetup at NYCC’ – which shows how the experience is already integrated into the broader convention and character portrayal activities.
Although most of the comments were congratulatory to Marvel Studios, the comment section also turned into a release date speculation forum. One user’s comment summarized all the possible release timelines of the different Marvel movies and series till 2027; however, these dates are not verified by the studio personnel yet.
Since the last years, the Baxter Building has been the official dwelling place of the Fantastic Four ever since they were introduced in the comics in 1961. The mockup for this event serves as the cornerstone for Marvel Studios’ future adaptation of being true to the source material while stirring up the audience’s imagination through their film. By allowing the public to easily access and experience such a fictional place, it connects the new comic readers to the long-standing ones who are already familiar with the property through the upcoming film.
Marvel Studios is still honing its skill of merging digital marketing with physical experiences, hence, giving birth to moments that are beyond regular movie marketing campaigns. Marvel Studios is also known for its animated projects on Disney+. The Fantastic Four pop-up is another step in their strategy to make superhero storytelling an immersive, multi-platform phenomenon that does not only occur on the screen.
