Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the pillars of the action genre. With an unforgettable and endlessly parodied voice to a physical stature recognizable by silhouette, Arnie is one of the most famous men in movie history. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Schwarzenegger appeared in countless beloved projects, from James Cameron’s True Lies and the soon-to-be remade The Running Man to the brilliantly goofy Last Action Hero and a career-defining role in The Terminator.
Now, 40 years since it first debuted on the big screen, another of Schwarzenegger’s famous ’80s titles has returned to the streaming charts. At the time of writing, Mark L. Lester’s Commando is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S. A non-stop action rollercoaster ride from start to finish, the film sets out to dial the action genre up a notch, and respectfully leaves a quality script behind. Surprisingly, the film faced censorship in several countries, receiving cuts in the UK due to graphic violence that violated the standards set by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). If that doesn’t make you want to give Commando a try, who knows what will. A synopsis of the movie reads:
“Retired Special Forces soldier John Matrix (Arnold Schwarzenegger) lives with daughter Jenny (Alyssa Milano) in isolation, but his privacy is disturbed by former commander Franklin Kirby (James Olson), who warns him that his fellow soldiers are getting killed one by one. After Kirby leaves, Jenny is kidnapped by former Latin American dictator Arius (Dan Hedaya), who wants Matrix to restore him to power. Instead, Matrix sets out to take down the rogue leader and rescue his daughter.”
What Was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Last Movie?
Apart from a likeness-cameo in the recent animated Predator: Killer of Killers, the last time Arnie was seen on the big screen was back in his most iconic franchise, as part of the ensemble in Terminator: Dark Fate, which sadly became one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. Despite bringing back fond franchise faces such as Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, the movie stumbled to just $250 million at the global box office against a reported budget of almost $200 million. That being said, the movie did earn positive responses from both critics and audiences, earning 82% from the latter on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
