Is the MCU keeping its cosmic? A Marvel rumor reveals that the studio already has plans tee’d up for the Mutant Saga following the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.
If the MCU’s Multiverse Saga could be described by one phrase, it’s “Stumbling toward the finish line”. Marvel was tripped up right at the start of their biggest arc yet due to a pandemic, and seemed to be fumbling for a foothold ever since. And with the saga finally coming to an end in just over two years with Avengers: Secret Wars, the big question on everyone’s mind is “What’s next?”
Luckily, it seems as though Marvel does have a solid plan as to where they want to take the Mutant Saga. Though it seems they had to go through a few variations before they found out where to take the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. According to a rumor from The Cosmic Circus, the original plan was to have yet another crossover- this time focused on the Eternals.
“One route they originally planned was the massive blockbuster team-up film tying into Judgement Day, featuring the Eternals, the Celestials, and the Horde.”
Who Is The MCU’s Next Big Bad?
Of course, with Eternals being a massive flop both critically and at the box office, Marvel has seemingly shifted plans away from the eclectic team of immortals. The rumor goes on to state that their new plans for the MCU’s big bad sits among the stars. Specifically, the franchise will be facing an Annihilation Wave after Avengers: Secret Wars.
“A newer route they plan to take features a smaller-scale story with Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave, who will serve as the main antagonist of the film and be introduced in an upcoming Disney+ project as a secondary antagonist for the Nova Corps.”
“The villains of that show would be high-ranking members of his army, possibly Admiral Salo or one of his concubines, Eradica, Extirpia, or Extermina.”
This idea for a big bad lines up much more with how Marvel used to handle the MCU. Slowly trickle in elements throughout films, and then figure out what to do with them when the big bad finally comes to form. It’s a simple plan that’s almost certain to get the MCU back on track after Avengers: Secret Wars, though potentially not to the level it used to be.
Avengers: Secret Wars is set to hit theaters in December 2027. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
