Fans of Rick and Morty finally know when the next wave of chaotic sci-fi adventures is arriving, and the show is already throwing some shade before the season even begins.
Adult Swim has confirmed that Season 9 premieres on May 24, and the announcement comes with an amusing jab aimed directly at the growing flood of AI-generated content online.
The official synopsis wastes no time making its point, leaning fully into the show’s signature irreverent humor:
“Rick and Morty is back, baby! Season Nine is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.”
That’s the kind of unhinged marketing that feels perfectly on-brand for the series, and it’s a funny reminder that the creative chaos behind Rick and Morty still comes from a room full of actual humans.
Adult Swim also released a handful of first-look images teasing what’s ahead. One shows Rick and Morty out camping in the wilderness, which of course probably won’t stay peaceful for long.
Another moment drops Rick into a strange gnome-like village that appears to spiral into total disaster. Morty looks horrified by something off-screen in another shot, while Rick clings on for dear life during what looks like a lab experiment gone very wrong back in the garage.
A full trailer is scheduled to arrive on March 12, and it should offer a clearer look at the portal-jumping insanity awaiting fans this season.
Season 9 also marks the third straight season featuring Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden as the voices of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith after Justin Roiland was fired from the series in 2023. By this point the new duo has firmly settled into the roles, and the show hasn’t slowed down in the creativity department.
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen shared his excitement about what the team is pulling off with the series, saying:
“I know it’s my job to say that this show just keeps topping itself, but it also has the benefit of being true. It’s kind of scary what this show unit is doing season over season – just pouring an absurd amount of talent and brilliance into these episodes.”
If the show’s track record is anything to go by, Season 9 will likely swing between ridiculous sci-fi concepts and the occasional emotional gut punch, all while sending Rick and Morty through another batch of dimension-hopping disasters.
And the universe of the show is continuing to grow. Adult Swim is also developing a new spin-off centered on President Curtis, the character voiced by Keith David, which should bring even more of the franchise’s weird political chaos into the spotlight.
For now though, fans can mark May 24 on their calendars. Rick and Morty is coming back with more multiverse madness, more dark comedy, and apparently a proudly human-made batch of “Grade A organic slop.”
