The Legend of Zelda is going through a big year as a franchise right now, as it passes a remarkable 40th anniversary that has been defined by some of the greatest games of all time. Whichever one you like the most, the series has rarely gone too long without giving us a gem, and things are looking exciting moving forward.
Rumors of an Ocarina of Time remake continue to grow, with many expecting an announcement at some point this year, while the movie adaptation continues at a great pace, by all accounts. New information about the latter is coming out all the time, and the latest tidbit should come as nice news to fans of the games.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post from a member of the crew who is working on the new The Legend of Zelda movie, which features an image of them wearing a shirt with a logo. Whilst the post was originally shared as a supposed “new” logo for the film, it’s actually just the Breath of the Wild logo repurposed. Whilst that might initially feel like a bit of a disappointment, it’s yet another sign that the first real movie adaptation we’ve ever had for the franchise will be rooted in the games that made it so great.
From the little information we have had so far, Zelda’s appearance seems very much based on what the character looks like in Breath of the Wild, while Link’s outfit looks very similar to his more realistic Twilight Princess days. At the same time, the latter’s character appears closest to perhaps the all-time GOAT Ocarina of Time. It’s a very cool mix and one that really could end up giving us a Zelda game like no other, if they can pull off everything they’re trying to achieve.
From a practical standpoint, it also arguably makes the movie a bit of a safer bet. Given that Zelda fans now come from across generations, thanks to the longevity of the franchise, drawing elements from all the different games that people grew up playing seems like a great idea. That said, it does look like Ocarina of Time will serve as the bedrock for this new story, and we know some of the iconic locations from that game are more than likely returning.
Fans were quick to share their own theories about what the film is going to be like in the comments, particularly on how the original story is going to play out. “I have a feeling this will be a blend between Ocarina of Time and BOTW. I have a feeling that it will have the young link stuff from OoT and when Gannon gets the Triforce, Calamity Gannon will throw Link into the future but more overgrown and ruined, closer to BOTW Hyrule,” one said.
“BotW’s story could be told in an interesting way. Link falls, wakes up 100 years later to find all his friends are dead, and Zelda is waiting for him to wake up and defeat Ganon. The game’s structure kinda betrays the potential of the story, but a movie could do it more justice. I still think they’ll go with OoT though,” another added.
Whatever does end up happening with the film, it’s certainly an exciting time to be a Zelda fan, particularly of the Ocarina of Time generation. Let’s just hope everyone involved in the project(s) can deliver on everything the community is hoping for.
