Fate has been decided in one of those stories that leaves a heavy weight on your chest long after you’ve read it…
Tanner Horner, the Texas-based FedEx driver who cropped to the 2022 sexual assault and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand, has been sentenced to death following a three-week trial that forced a community to confront unimaginable horror. From the very beginning, this case has been as disturbing as it is heartbreaking, and now a jury has decided that Horner will pay the ultimate price for what prosecutors described as pure evil.

Horner, 34, pleaded guilty to capital murder on the very first day of his trial back on April 7. Still, jurors were tasked with determining whether he should spend the rest of his life behind bars or be sentenced to death. On Tuesday, they made their decision: execution by lethal injection.
Wise County District Attorney James Stainton didn’t hold back during closing arguments, making it clear why prosecutors believed the death penalty was warranted:
“Tanner Horner is proof why parents hug their children a little tighter. He’s proof of why children are nervous to go play outside. He’s proof of why there’s evil in society and we could never turn our back.”
As those words hung in the air, Horner reportedly showed little to no emotion. He stared straight ahead as the sentence was read, only responding with a quiet “yes sir” when asked if he understood his rights moving forward.
But if Horner was silent, Athena’s family was not.
Per the US Sun and others, her uncle, Elijah Strand, delivered a statement that cut straight through the courtroom. In it, he spoke not just for himself, but for everyone who loved the little girl whose life was stolen far too soon:
“What he took from this world, not just a child, he took a light, a future and a piece of every single person who loved her. She was laughter, curiosity … she had dreams that she will never get to chase, birthdays that she will never celebrate and a life she will never get to live because of his actions.”
And then, he added to Horner specifically:
“You are a footnote in Athena’s story. Her name will forever be remembered. Her name will forever be celebrated. Everyone will forget you. You wanted 15 minutes of fame and you got it. Nobody is going to remember you after this.”
It’s hard to process the brutality of what happened. Prosecutors laid out chilling evidence, including audio from inside the delivery truck capturing Athena’s final moments — evidence so distressing that it reportedly brought jurors to tears. The details are devastating: a child fighting for her life against a grown man, violence that went far beyond comprehension, and a crime that shattered a family forever.

Horner’s defense acknowledged the overwhelming evidence, and even attempted to argue brain damage and remorse, but it wasn’t enough to sway the jury. The facts were simply too horrific.
Of course, as we’ve reported, this all began on November 30, 2022, when Athena was taken from outside her home after Horner delivered a package for FedEx. And with it, what should have been a normal day turned into a nightmare no one could have predicted.
Now, while the death sentence has been handed down, the legal process is far from over. In Texas, such sentences are automatically reviewed, and appeals can stretch on for years — and sometimes, decades.
Still, for Athena’s family, this moment marks a painful chapter of accountability, and a small step toward justice for a little girl whose story has touched so many.
