ONE LAST KILL Has an Ending That Might Surprise Marvel Fans — GeekTyrant

Marvel fans have spent months wondering where Frank Castle disappeared to after Daredevil: Born Again. While the MCU kept teasing massive future events involving Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, and the larger chaos brewing across New York, a lot of viewers were far more interested in one simple question: what’s going on with the Punisher?

Now that The Punisher: One Last Kill has arrived on Disney+, audiences finally have their answer. The special delivers exactly what fans hoped for from Jon Bernthal’s brutal antihero, including plenty of violence, emotional damage, and Frank Castle bulldozing his way through criminals like a human wrecking ball.

But the ending takes a route that may catch some viewers off guard because instead of functioning like a giant setup for the next MCU crossover, it does almost the exact opposite.

That’s what makes it work so well. A lot of people expected One Last Kill to directly launch Frank into Spider-Man: Brand New Day or tie heavily into the escalating war against Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk after the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

The MCU has conditioned audiences to expect every project to act like connective tissue for the next thing coming down the pipeline. Instead, director Reinaldo Marcus Green keeps the story locked onto Frank himself.

The special barely concerns itself with Spider-Man, Mayor Fisk, or the larger MCU. Frank stays trapped in his own violent orbit, dealing with trauma the only way he knows how. It’s gritty, self-contained, and refreshingly unconcerned with dangling giant sequel hooks every five minutes.

That choice may frustrate fans looking for major reveals about Frank’s future, but it also makes One Last Kill feel completely focused. Marvel finally lets one of these projects breathe without turning it into a giant commercial for three other movies and two Disney+ shows.

The ending especially drives that point home. Instead of teasing some massive crossover event, the final scene quietly circles Frank back to something incredibly familiar… the classic Punisher look.

After years of the character constantly shifting appearances between Daredevil, The Punisher, and now the MCU proper, Frank once again suits up in the iconic skull vest.

It’s a small moment, but longtime fans know there’s actually been a weird running joke surrounding Frank “earning” the Punisher costume over and over again across multiple shows. One Last Kill leans into that history by bringing him full circle visually, even if the actual story avoids spelling out what comes next.

That might be the smartest thing the MCU has done in a while. One of Marvel’s biggest problems over the last few years has been how exhausting the franchise became to keep up with.

Disney+ shows multiplied, storylines sprawled everywhere, and audiences suddenly needed a spreadsheet just to remember who appeared where. Watching everything started to feel less like entertainment and more like assigned reading.

Thankfully, The Punisher: One Last Kill avoids that trap completely. The script, co-written by Green and Bernthal, makes this story feel optional. Fans who love Frank Castle get a tense, violent standalone chapter centered entirely around him. Meanwhile, casual viewers can skip it and still understand whatever role he eventually plays in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

That’s a huge improvement over the MCU’s recent habit of making every single project feel mandatory. Sure, there are callbacks to the Netflix era and references tied to Frank’s tragic past, but the special never turns into a lore dump or an overloaded setup machine. It simply tells a Punisher story and gets out cleanly.

Marvel could’ve easily stuffed this special with endless teases, post-credit gimmicks, and giant revelations about Spider-Man’s future. Instead, it delivers a stripped-down Frank Castle story that stands on its own and trusts audiences to simply enjoy the ride.

By the time Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters, Frank Castle can just show up, do his thing, and move on. No homework required.

The Punisher: One Last Kill is now streaming on Disney+.
