Four years after Netflix’s The Munsters was released, one of the movie’s actors has shared a disappointing update about the chances for a sequel.
In September 2022, writer and director Rob Zombie delivered The Munsters, based off the same-named, horror-tinged family sitcom that ran on CBS from 1964 to 1966. Rather than fully reboot the property, Zombie’s movie served as a prequel to the original series, and largely retained the same goofy tone. However, the prospect of The Munsters 2 being made isn’t looking good right now based on actor Richard Brake’s latest comments.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for Pinocchio Unstrung, Brake, who played the roles of Dr. Wolfgang and Orlock in The Munsters, mentioned that he hadn’t heard from Zombie about moving forward with The Munsters 2. That said, Brake also acknowledged that this could change given his experience with the filmmaker providing short notice on a project. In the actor’s words:
With Rob, you never know. He just sends you a text about three weeks before, going, “What you up to? I’m making a movie, you free?” So I’m just waiting for the text. Who knows with Rob? He’s busy right now doing a lot of music. I know that for sure. And if he needs me, he’ll text me.
Zombie’s movie is just the latest of The Munsters’ many follow-ups and reboots, and the first since the TV special Mockingbird Lane aired in 2012. The new movie chronicled how Dr. Wolfgang and his assistant, Jorge Garcia’s Floop, created Herman Munster, played by Jeff Daniel Phillips, and how Herman then met his wife, Lily, played by Sheri Moon Zombie. The origin story’s cast also included Daniel Roebuck as The Count (a.k.a. Grandpa), Sylvester McCoy as Igor, Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp, and Cassandra Peterson as Barbara Carr.
Made as a co-production between Universal 1440 Entertainment and Spookshow International Films, Zombie’s The Munsters filmed in Budapest from November 2021 to July 2022. It was then released on both Netflix and home media two months later, and earned mixed critical reception. ScreenRant’s review of The Munsters rated the movie four out of 10 stars, saying that there was “a significant need for sophistication and discipline with this film. Sadly, the new iteration of The Munsters fails to hit the mark. Zombie was close, but not close enough.”
While it remains to be seen if Zombie, Brake, and the rest of The Munsters’ cast and crew reunite for a sequel, there’s another adaptation of the classic sitcom in the works. It was reported in 2024 that James Wan is developing a “darker reimagining” of The Munsters called 1313, with Lindsey Anderson Beer being tapped as the potential series’ showrunner. However, it’s unclear if this project is moving forward as well.
2022’s The Munsters marked Brake’s fourth time working with Zombie, as they previously collaborated on Halloween II, 31, and 3 from Hell. Brake is also known for playing Joe Chill in Batman Begins, the Night King in Game of Thrones seasons 4 and 5, and Merle Callahan in Mayor of Kingstown. He plays Geppetto in the aforementioned Pinocchio Uprising, which is a slasher take on Carlo Collodi’s original novel, and opens in theaters on July 24.
