Structure, Pricing, and the Details That Add Up

Ask most salon owners where their menu lives and they will point to a laminated card by the till or a page on their website that has not changed in two years. Yet that list of services is one of the hardest-working pieces of marketing in the whole business. It is often the first thing a new client reads, it shapes how much they spend, and it quietly tells them whether your salon is a quick-trim shop or a place worth booking weeks ahead for. A well-built menu does more than list what you do — it guides people toward the choices that suit them and, along the way, lifts your average ticket. Here is how to build one that actually pulls its weight.

Treat the menu as your silent salesperson

When you are with a client, you can read the room, suggest a gloss to brighten their colour, or mention that a scalp massage pairs beautifully with the treatment they booked. Your menu has to do that selling on its own, for every visitor who lands on your booking page at 11pm. That means it cannot simply be a spreadsheet of names and numbers. Think of each line as a small pitch: what the service is, who it is for, roughly how long it takes, and why it is worth the price. Clients rarely buy what they do not understand, and confusion almost always defaults to the cheapest option.

Start with structure, not a price list

Before you touch pricing, group your services in a way that mirrors how clients think, not how your back office is organised. A logical flow — say, Hair, Colour, Treatments, then Add-ons — helps people find what they came for and discover things they did not know you offered. Keep categories tight; a menu with fifteen headings and three services under each feels overwhelming. Within every category, lead with your signature or most popular service so the eye lands on strength first. If you offer the same service at different levels (junior stylist versus senior, for instance), make that ladder obvious so clients can self-select by budget without feeling nudged.

Name and describe services so the value is obvious

Insider shorthand is the enemy of a good menu. “Full head foils” means something to you; to a first-timer it is a guess. Pair a clear name with one plain-language line of description and a realistic duration. Compare “Balayage — £120” with “Balayage (2.5 hrs) — hand-painted, sun-kissed lightening for a soft, grown-out finish — £120.” The second version sets expectations, justifies the price and the time, and reduces the awkward surprises that lead to bad reviews. You do not need flowery copy — just enough that someone outside the industry knows exactly what they are booking.

Price with intention

Pricing is where menus quietly win or lose money. A few principles carry most of the weight:

  • Use tiers, not one flat rate. Offering good, better, and best versions of a service gives budget-conscious clients an entry point and lets your keenest clients spend more — most people gravitate to the middle option, which is exactly where you want your margin.
  • Anchor with a premium item. A high-end package near the top of a category makes everything below it look reasonable by comparison.
  • Round for clarity, not just habit. Prices that are easy to read feel more honest than ones ending in awkward figures.
  • Revisit costs regularly. Product prices and your own expertise both rise over time; a menu that has not moved in years is usually underpricing your best work.

Build in add-ons and upsells

The easiest revenue in any salon comes from the extras a client happily says yes to once they are already in the chair: a deep-conditioning mask, a brow tint, a hot-towel finish, an express manicure while colour develops. List these as a clear Add-ons section and, crucially, surface them at the moment of booking rather than hoping staff remember to mention them. A small, well-placed prompt — “Add a 15-minute scalp massage for £12?” — converts far better than a poster on the wall, because it meets the client while they are already deciding.

Take the menu digital

A printed card can only do so much. The moment your menu lives inside your booking system, it starts working around the clock: clients choose services and add-ons themselves, see accurate durations, and book without a single phone call. This is where a purpose-built tool earns its place. TimeTailor, a free all-in-one platform for salons, lets you turn your list of services into a working Salon Service Menu that clients can browse and book 24/7, complete with suggested add-ons that nudge up the average ticket. Its guided onboarding will even build your service menu and staff schedules for you in minutes, and you can adjust everything from your phone. Because the platform is free — TimeTailor earns from a small 3.9% fee on online bookings only, which you can absorb or pass to the client — a small salon can run a polished, always-open menu without a subscription. A built-in translator also shows the booking flow in each client’s language while you receive the details in yours, which is quietly powerful in mixed-language neighbourhoods.

Keep it alive

A menu is never finished. Review it every quarter: retire services that no longer sell, rename anything clients keep asking to clarify, promote the treatments you want to grow, and check your durations against what jobs actually take. Pay attention to your booking data — the services people abandon at checkout, the add-ons that never get picked — and adjust. The salons that treat the menu as a living tool, rather than a one-time chore, are usually the ones with fuller chairs and healthier tickets.

Your service menu is not admin — it is strategy. Structure it around how clients think, describe each service so its value is obvious, price in tiers with genuine add-ons, and then let it work for you around the clock inside a proper booking system. Do that, and the menu stops being a static list and becomes the quiet engine that fills your diary and grows every visit.
