AVL Sounds Fest is returning to Asheville, North Carolina this August 6–9 after a hiatus in 2025. The newly rebranded event, formerly known as AVLfest, was forced to take a year off as a result of significant impacts to the area following Hurricane Helene.
Leading the lineup is Dr. Dog, making their only publicly-announced performance of 2026. For the past five years frontman and Philly area-native Scott McMicken has called Asheville home.
“I’m just constantly blown away by the depth of brilliance and diversity of the music scene,” says the beloved musician, who previously appeared at the festival with his side-project Scott McMicken and The Ever-Expanding. “AVL Sounds Fest puts that reality on full display with such abundance that it’s become my favorite time of the year. And this year I’m extra excited to get to partake in it all with my band, Dr. Dog.”
Along with a new name, the citywide music festival is back with a renewed mission, and one of its finest lineups yet. The four day event, which spotlights Asheville’s eclectic music scene, boasts more than 240 local, regional, national and international artists across 17 stages.
Alongside Dr. Dog, the lineup also features the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Big Freedia, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Sir Woman, Grace Bowers, Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket, Young Gun Silver Fox, Tyler Ramsey, River Whyless, Toubab Krewe, Floating Action, and dozens of emerging artists from across Appalachia and beyond.
From indie rock, Americana and the NOLA sound to funk, jazz, soul, electronic music, hip-hop, and world music, AVL Sounds Fest continues with the same diverse musical approach that highlighted its first two editions. “This lineup reflects everything we love about this festival — there’s something here for everyone,” says the event’s co-founder Jeff Whitworth.
While reinforcing Asheville’s reputation as one of America’s premier music destinations, the sprawling gathering’s 2026 edition will also serve as a milestone in Asheville’s ongoing recovery following Hurricane Helene.
That storm’s catastrophic damage inspired organizers to embrace the area’s story of resilience, while punctuating the importance of the community’s world-class artists, independent venues and local businesses.
Aforementioned New Orleans-based co-headliners Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Big Freedia, survivors of Hurricane Katrina, also bring a special connection to this year’s festival. Their performances symbolize the shared experience of two cities whose music communities have persevered through tragic natural disasters.
Perhaps what makes AVL Sounds Fest stand out in comparison to more traditional destination festivals is that it forgoes a single site model. With performances throughout Asheville, attendees are free to move between the clubs, theaters, breweries, and outdoor spaces and experience the city as a whole.
The Orange Peel, The Grey Eagle, Asheville Music Hall, Eulogy, Asheville Yards and Hellbender are just some of the venues that will host performances when AVL Sounds Fest 2026 takes place next month.
During its first two years, the festival quickly became one of the Southeast’s most innovative music events, drawing guests from all 50 states. It also affirmed Asheville’s growing appeal as a cultural destination.
The return of AVL Sounds Fest also carries an important charitable component. A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit the WNC Long Haul – Recovery and Resilience Fund, a donor-advised fund through the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The fund provides ongoing support for Hurricane Helene recovery through initiatives focused on arts and culture, local businesses, and long-term assistance for residents affected by the storm.
