Mother’s Call For ‘Indigo Alert’ Goes Viral As Search For Missing Autistic Boy In Calgary Continues

A heartbreaking case out of Canada is sparking an emotional conversation that is now reaching far beyond Calgary.

As the desperate search for 11-year-old Parker Wells continues, one local mom is urging officials to rethink how quickly the public is notified when vulnerable children disappear.

According to GlobalNews.ca on Tuesday night, Jennifer Ball — who is the mother of a seven-year-old autistic child but is not related to Parker — has launched a campaign calling for a new emergency notification system specifically designed for missing neurodivergent children.

Her proposal is for what she calls an “Indigo Alert,” a name inspired by the deep purple color often associated with autism awareness. The idea is straightforward: when a child with significant developmental vulnerabilities goes missing, families shouldn’t have to wait until an abduction is suspected before a widespread public alert can be issued. And honestly, it’s a GREAT idea.

Of course, the conversation comes as Parker’s disappearance has gripped the Calgary community. The non-verbal 11-year-old, who has autism, was reported missing last Thursday after leaving his day home. Police have mounted a massive search effort involving hundreds of officers, search-and-rescue teams, volunteers, specialized units, and countless community members.

An Amber Alert was ultimately issued about two days later after the Alberta government granted an exemption because of the unique circumstances surrounding the case, even though investigators had not confirmed an abduction. And understandably, that Amber Alert delay has raised difficult questions. Many parents of autistic children say every minute matters when a child who may not be able to communicate, ask for help, or identify themselves disappears.

Still, experts say the issue is more complicated than simply expanding the current alert system. Amanda Pick, CEO of the Missing Children Society of Canada, told the Canadian Press that Amber Alerts were intentionally designed with very specific criteria, and while she understands why families are calling for broader notifications, she also noted that officials have to balance public safety with the risk of alert fatigue if emergency notifications become too frequent.

Pick also pointed to the Child Search Network, a police-operated program that can send geographically targeted text alerts in certain high-risk missing child cases that don’t qualify for an Amber Alert. Even so, advocates believe there is still a gap that leaves some of the most vulnerable children without immediate, province-wide awareness.

Still, right now, though, the focus remains where it belongs: finding Parker. His disappearance has deeply affected families throughout the region, particularly those raising children with autism who know how frightening situations like this can become in an instant.

As we’ve said before, our hearts remain with Parker’s loved ones, the search teams working tirelessly, and everyone hoping for the outcome that matters most: bringing this little boy home safely.
