Brandon Sanderson’s plans for The Stormlight Archive are absolutely massive, with the “Back Five” novels expected to release over the next decade and continuing the saga roughly 10 to 15 years after the finale of his last entry, Wind and Truth. The universe continues to expand in other mediums as well, with an official Apple TV series in early development and the official Stormlight RPG already a massive hit among fans.
The Stormlight Archive and the larger Cosmere universe have become one of modern fantasy’s most elaborate IPs, and it’s hard to believe Sanderson has the time to work on so many different projects beyond Stormlight itself. There’s no question he is one of the most prolific authors and creative minds out there at the moment, delivering unbelievable amounts of content to sate his fanbase’s seemingly never-ending thirst for more.
As such, The Stormlight Archive is officially expanding into new realms with the exciting announcement of Stormlight: Champions (via Brotherwise).
While you may have heard about the exciting upcoming release of the new strategy war game, Stormlight: War for Roshar, developer Brotherwise Games recently quietly released a surprise update for the project that unveiled an official “mini-expansion” titled Stormlight: Champions. The expansion will be a separate add-on option for backers on the official Kickstarter campaign page, which is available to preview now here.
According to the recent press release, “backers will be able to pledge for the base game, or they can choose to upgrade their game with the Champions mini-expansion and deluxe components.” While there are no major details available yet regarding the Champions expansion, the Kickstarter campaign will go live sometime this Fall, and War for Roshar will also be featured at GenCon, which kicks off tomorrow, July 30, 2026, and runs through the weekend until Sunday, August 2.
Brotherwise has confirmed that players will be getting their first looks at War for Roshar this weekend at the 2026 Gen Con event, and they’ve also provided a sense of what fans can expect in terms of gameplay:
War for Roshar is an epic board game that plays one-on-one, three-vs-one, or in teams of two over eight rounds, each punctuated by a raging Highstorm or Everstorm. During your turn, you’ll fight on multiple fronts. Upgrade your leaders, deploy units, play Stormlight-powered action cards, win neutral nations to your side, and fight to control territory.
While there’s no specific launch date for the Kickstarter campaign just yet, you can follow the project to receive updates as they become available and to be notified as soon as the project goes live. Overall, both Stormlight: War for Roshar and its Champions expansion mark the start of an exciting new chapter for Sanderson fans, promising the definitive Stormlight tabletop board game experience.
