Tate McRae is really opening up about her mental health after she finished her latest tour.

Tater Tots will know Tate embarked on her Miss Possessive Tour last year, doing 83 shows in North America, South America, and Europe. It was the supporting tour of her third album So Close To What, and a huge moment in time for her fans — there was so much demand for her they had to add on six new dates!

But with all that work came what Tate described to Variety as a really “dark” place. In her new interview that dropped on Monday, the 23-year-old pop star opened up about her mental health struggles that came after she wrapped up the tour. She even compared herself to the famous poet Sylvia Plath, who was known to struggle deeply with her mental health:

“I remember reading Sylvia Plath being like, ‘I am her.’ My thoughts felt so dark at the time, and I felt so lonely. I really needed to come back into my body and regulate my nervous system. I was so shot after the tour. I couldn’t really sleep at night.”

Wow. The Just Keep Watching singer continued, opening up about her headspace at the time:

“I’d seen so much of myself that I was like, ‘I want to go into a black room and not look in a mirror for six months.’ And I think I really had to check myself and be like, ‘You’re not the worst person in the world. You’re not the ugliest person in the world. You haven’t done everything wrong. And, you know, you’re just doing what you love’.”

In another part of the interview, Tate addressed the anxiety she gets, and revealed dancing is her number one self care routine:

“Sometimes in smaller rooms, you feel more nervous than [in front of] 20,000 people, and you start to target why you feel nervous and why you don’t try to overcome that. I think it’s muscle memory. When I was a kid feeling awkward in my skin or feeling uncomfortable, dancing was my way of feeling cool and feeling like I excelled at something. And I think I feel that way when I perform, like I’m in my element.”

We’re glad she’s able to do what she loves and find an outlet. And we’re sure she’s got tons of support from her loved ones, as well!

It takes so much bravery to be so candid about your mental health. We’re sending Tate love. We hope she’s doing better now.
