Live-Action THE JETSONS Movie Confirmed With Jim Carrey Set to Star — GeekTyrant

Warner Bros. has confirmed that a live-action The Jetsons movie is in development, with Jim Carrey attached to star. It’s a pretty wild combination of actor and property, but it also makes a lot of sense.

If you’re going to take the colorful, wonderfully strange world of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon and turn it into a big live-action movie, Carrey feels like the kind of performer who could have a blast living in that universe.

Reboots, remakes, and decades-later sequels are a huge part of Hollywood. Disney’s seemingly endless parade of live-action remakes has frustrated plenty of fans, while studios have also started digging through the movies of the 1990s and 2000s for another round.

Studios are searching just about everywhere for familiar properties that can be revived for modern audiences. Warner Bros. is reaching considerably further back with The Jetsons.

The original animated sitcom debuted in 1962 and imagined an American family living a century into the future. George Jetson, Jane, Judy, Elroy, Astro, and Rosie the Robot occupied a world of floating cities, flying cars, automated homes, ridiculous gadgets, video calls, and technology designed to make everyday life easier, even when it inevitably created a whole new set of problems.

Now that retro-futuristic world is officially being lined up for the live-action treatment. Warner Bros. revealed the project in a shareholder letter while discussing movies planned beyond 2027. The studio didn’t offer much in the way of story details, but it did confirm the most important pieces of information:

“Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including…a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey.”

The same letter also referenced future installments of The Matrix and Batman, giving us a glimpse at some of the major franchises Warner Bros. intends to lean on in the years ahead.

For The Jetsons, however, Carrey is easily the most intriguing part of the announcement. The actor has spent his career turning exaggerated characters into comedy gold, from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask to Dumb and Dumber and, more recently, the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

Give Carrey a futuristic home full of malfunctioning technology, an impatient robot maid, a dog named Astro, and a flying vehicle caught in space traffic, and there are plenty of opportunities for him to unleash the physical comedy that made him a star.

Warner Bros. hasn’t revealed which character Carrey will play, although George Jetson certainly feels like the obvious possibility. Until the studio actually confirms his role, though, that part remains speculation.

There’s also a genuinely interesting question at the center of adapting The Jetsons today: What exactly counts as “the future” anymore?

When the animated series premiered in 1962, its 2060s setting was roughly a century away. That distance gave the show’s creators a giant playground for imagining what ordinary life might eventually become. Today, we’re only a few decades away from the period the series envisioned.

Sure, we’re talking to computers, holding video calls, using robot vacuums, and asking artificial intelligence to handle everyday tasks. But I haven’t seen anybody folding their car into a briefcase after flying to work. At least not yet.

That creates an interesting challenge for the filmmakers. They could keep the 2060s setting and embrace the original show’s wonderfully optimistic version of what people in the ’60s thought our future would look like.

There’s something charming about that idea, especially if the production commits to the retro-futuristic design instead of trying to make everything sleek and contemporary.

The other option would be moving the Jetson family considerably further into the future. Doing that would give the filmmakers more freedom to dream up new technology, architecture, vehicles, and absurd conveniences without having the audience constantly comparing everything to a future that’s getting increasingly close.

Either direction could work. What would be disappointing is sanding away the personality that made The Jetsons so memorable.

The floating buildings, conveyor belts, bubble-shaped vehicles, ridiculous machines, and colorful space-age aesthetic are a huge part of the appeal. A live-action adaptation should look like somebody cracked open a 1960s vision of tomorrow and spent a blockbuster budget bringing it to life.

This also isn’t the Jetson family’s first trip to the big screen. The animated Jetsons: The Movie was released in 1990, but bringing the property into live-action more than three decades later is an entirely different challenge.

Technology has changed dramatically, visual effects can now create environments that would’ve been nearly impossible to convincingly build in previous decades, and audiences have very different expectations when it comes to adaptations of classic cartoons.

There’s an opportunity here to make something visually crazy, funny, and unlike most of the franchise revivals currently coming out of Hollywood.

A lot will depend on who joins Carrey, who ends up directing, and what approach Warner Bros. takes with the material. We also don’t have a release date beyond the studio positioning the movie as part of its post-2027 slate.

Still, a live-action The Jetsons movie starring Jim Carrey is officially on the horizon. That’s such a strange and potentially awesome pairing that I’m already curious to see what Warner Bros. has planned.
