Forget cosmic space battles for a second. HBO’s new DC series Lanterns is landing this Sunday, August 16, and the pitch behind it is genuinely one of the more interesting swings the DCU has taken: two Green Lanterns walk into small-town Nebraska to investigate a murder, and it turns into a full-blown conspiracy thriller.
Think True Detective with a ring that can turn your willpower into a giant fist. That’s not us being cute — DC Studios boss James Gunn has literally described it that way himself.
Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the grizzled veteran Lantern, opposite Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the newer recruit getting thrown into the deep end. The mismatched-partner energy is very intentional. The early trailers lean hard into buddy-cop tension before anything supernatural even shows up. The cast around them is stacked too: Laura Linney, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, Paula Patton and Ulrich Thomsen as the classic villain Sinestro, plus Nathan Fillion returning as Guy Gardner after his Superman appearance.
Behind the camera, this is a serious pedigree play. Chris Mundy, who ran Ozark, is showrunner, working alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comics writer Tom King. That’s not a lineup you assemble for a standard superhero rom; it’s a signal that HBO wants this to feel like prestige TV that happens to have Green Lanterns in it, not the other way around.
The setup: Hal and John get pulled into rural Nebraska after what looks like an unexplained mass shooting, one Hal immediately suspects isn’t as local as it seems. From there it plays out as a grounded murder investigation with dual timelines. The season threads a 2016 storyline through the present-day case, so expect this one to unfold slowly rather than hand you easy answers in episode one.
Lanterns is also part of the DCU’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” era, meaning it’s wired into the same universe as this year’s films rather than sitting off in its own corner. John Stewart’s version of the character is set to show up again in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow.
Lanterns premieres Sunday, August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
