57 Years Later, Peanuts’ Best Running Gag Has Only Gotten Funnier

Almost sixty years later, Peanuts‘ best running gag is funnier than ever, perfectly playing off how beloved Charles Schulz’s franchise is all around the world.

Debuting in 1950, Charles Schulz never liked the name ‘Peanuts,’ originally intending to call the franchise “Li’l Folks.” But among the hundreds of millions of fans worldwide, it’s often known simply as ‘Charlie Brown.’

The name recognition of its main character, equaled by incredibly few other pop culture characters, makes what’s arguably Peanuts‘ best running gag even funnier.

While Peanuts developed a score of running gags over the years, our pick for the best is Snoopy not knowing Charlie Brown’s name. The gag began on April 11, 1969, when Snoopy found himself lost in the rain, having decided to seek out his mom. Miserable about his situation, Snoopy reflects:

If I were home, my master would be bringing me my supper about now… what was his name? That kid with the round head…

April 14’s follow-up strip cemented the gag, with Snoopy referring to Charlie Brown as “that round-headed kid” – a term that became Snoopy’s go-to name for his master. In January 17, 1986, Snoopy couldn’t remember Charlie Brown’s name even when his owner gave him a bunch of clues including “my last name rhymes with ‘crown'” and on July 8, 1987, Snoopy couldn’t be bothered to do the “research” to find out his owner’s name even when writing his autobiography.

Outside the obvious (that Snoopy should know the name of the person he sees all day, every day), the gag works for two main reasons. First, it’s perfectly in-tune with Charles Schulz’s theme of the indignities and unfairness of childhood. Charlie Brown is a classic sadsack who can’t win, to the point that even his beloved pet dog doesn’t remember his name.

Second, ‘Charlie Brown’ is one of the most famous names in pop culture. Even people who have never read or watched Peanuts know Charlie Brown by his full name on sight. As the years have passed and Peanuts has become iconic, it’s even funnier in 2026 that Snoopy is the one person who doesn’t know the name ‘Charlie Brown.’

Charles Schulz Made the Most of This Running Gag

As well as returning to this gag again and again in his daily strips, Schulz used the premise of Snoopy not remembering Charlie Brown’s name for the spin-off children’s book The Round-Headed Kid and Me.

Published in 1998, the book sees Charlie Brown grow depressed that Snoopy doesn’t remember his name, staying home from school to try and butter up his pet. When Charlie Brown is forced to return to school, he’s worried Snoopy will resent it, but his dog assures him that he’s as happy as ever, and didn’t need any extra pampering in the first place.

The book hilariously puts Charlie Brown’s mind at ease that Snoopy really does love him, while reiterating that Snoopy will simply never be able to remember his name, no matter how much he cares about his master.

Other Competitors for Peanuts’ Best Running Gag

There are a variety of other candidates for Peanuts‘ best running gag, and the frontrunner is obviously Lucy tricking Charlie Brown into trying to kick a football.

The football gag began on November 14, 1951, and highlights Charlie Brown’s hapless optimism, always able to be coaxed into believing that this time, he has a chance.

It’s a fantastic gag that has become a common touchpoint in pop culture. However, it’s also one with a resolution. Between 1977 to 1981, Schulz approved a comic drawn by Amazing Spider-Man‘s John Romita Sr. where the Marvel hero helps Charlie finally kick the football (below.)

A commission for comic collector Mike Burkey, the comic wasn’t published in strip form, but has widely circulated online. While Lucy tricking Charlie Brown remains classic, the knowledge that he eventually kicked the ball resolves the gag, while Snoopy not knowing Charlie Brown’s name only gets funnier the longer time passes.

Spider-Man saves Charlie Brown from Lucy.

Snoopy never remembering Charlie Brown’s name is one of the crowning gags in Peanuts history, emphasizing Charlie Brown’s characterization as a well-meaning kid who simply never gets a break. Let us know below whether you agree this is Peanuts‘ best running gag, and which jokes you think deserve consideration for the title.
