Netflix’s Mystery Inc. is one step closer to getting back in the mystery-solving business. Production has officially wrapped on Scooby-Doo: Origins, the upcoming live-action series headed to Netflix in 2027, and some new behind-the-scenes photos offer a fresh look at McKenna Grace and Maxwell Jenkins as Daphne and Fred.
The photos feature Grace and Jenkins on set as their new versions of the classic characters. With filming now complete, Scooby-Doo: Origins moves closer to its already confirmed global Netflix debut next year.
The series is taking the franchise back to the early days of Mystery Inc., before the gang became the meddling kids we all know.
The story follows Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where things get weird after they encounter a lost puppy connected to a suspected supernatural murder. Their investigation eventually brings Velma and Fred into the mystery.
That puppy, of course, is Scooby, and Netflix is doing something pretty fun with the character. Scooby-Doo: Origins will use a real Great Dane to play Scooby, marking the first time the franchise has featured an actual live-action dog as its iconic mystery-solving mascot.
Considering how much of the show’s personality depends on Scooby, it’ll be interesting to see how the series brings his familiar personality to life.
Joining Grace and Jenkins are Tanner Hagen as Shaggy and Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma. The cast also includes Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Jona Xiao, Sara Gilbert, and Bruce McGill, with Paul Walter Hauser appearing in an undisclosed role.
Andre Benjamin and Cathy Moriarty have also joined the series in recurring roles, giving the show a sizable collection of talent surrounding its young Mystery Inc. crew.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners and executive producers, with Warner Bros. Television producing the series.
There have been plenty of different versions of Scooby-Doo over the decades, but this one could end up being really cool.
