Burial for a Butterfly is a sort of narrative driven, slice of life, story where you play as an individual who is alone on a tiny planet. There are little things to interact with, puzzles to solve, but it’s not done in a way that feels timed or pressured. It’s more about discovery and toying around with the island that you are on.
Burial for a Butterfly almost feels more like a toy that you are playing with than a video game, but not in a bad way, in more of a calm, toying around sort of way. The game itself is the first within the Singing Worlds series and has been inspired by the developer’s own life, reflecting in the forest. It sort of mimics that – alongside befriending trees and talking with owls. You do get to know the forest around you and what your place in the world is.
Burial for a Butterfly does look like it expands from just you, alone, on your planet. There seems to be people that can end up taking over! I played a smaller demo of the game at Gamescom, where I found myself very much enjoying the solitude and the way that you could tinker around. There are some improvements that can be made with the way that interacting works; sometimes the selection area of something felt extremely hard to tap, which made me not understand how to progress and get a little frustrated in the fact that things weren’t changing.
Currently, Burial for a Butterfly is set to release later this year. For now, you can wishlist the game on Steam.
