“If you want to understand me, watch my movies.” Studiocanal has debuted a brand new official trailer for the 4K restoration of 90s biopic classic Chaplin, telling the story of iconic comedian movie star Charlie Chaplin. This is also the movie that originally put Robert Downey Jr. on the map – he stars as Chaplin & received his very first Oscar nomination in 1993. An aging Charlie Chaplin discusses his autobiography with his editor, recounting his amazing journey from his poverty-stricken childhood to world-wide success after the ingenious invention of the Little Tramp. Directed by fellow actor / filmmaker Richard Attenborough, the film opened in December 1992 but flopped at the box office. With time it has been reappraised and currently has a 3.6 average on Letterboxd. Chaplin’s complex & dramatic career is brought to life by a stunning array of Hollywood talent including an unforgettable performance from Robert Downey Jr. as Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. with Sir Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Kline, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller, David Duchovny, Moira Kelly, Marisa Tomei & Geraldine Chaplin. With a soul stirring musical score from celebrated composer John Barry. The film got 3 Oscar nominations, but didn’t win any. It’s not playing in theaters, only getting a 4K UHD BR release in the UK this fall for anyone wants to add it to their collection.

From legendary director Richard Attenborough comes the epic story of a true cinematic icon – Charlie Chaplin. In this award-winning masterpiece, we follow Chaplin’s increasingly complicated life from a poverty-stricken music hall entertainer in England to eventual triumph in America. The story of Chaplin is also the very story of cinema as we watch him grow from an early silent era slapstick star to one of the most important, pioneering fathers of filmmaking. Despite the wondrous, magical humour in his work, his private life was afflicted with infamy, sadness and a growing sense of loss. Chaplin is directed by beloved British actor / filmmaker Richard Attenborough, the 8th film he directed at the time after making Cry Freedom (1987) and before making Shadowlands (1993). The screenplay is written by William Boyd, Bryan Forbes, William Goldman. From a story by Diana Hawkins. Based on the books “My Autobiography” by Charles Chaplin and “Chaplin: His Life and Art” by David Robinson. Produced by Richard Attenborough & Mario Kassar. This initially opened in US & UK theaters in December 1992 though it didn’t do very well, before earning a total of 3 Oscar nominations. Studiocanal is re-releasing Attenborough’s Chaplin film in 4K soon – including on 4K UHD Blu-ray starting in November. For more info, visit their official site. A favorite?
