Universal Pictures has announced the new title for The Mummy 4, which features the long-awaited return of Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell. Seriously, I can’t wait for this one. Those first two movies are just so ridiculously fun, and I think we all need a little more of that energy right now. Oh right, the new title is… The Mummy: Book of the Dead.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead
The new film is being directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script by David Coggeshall. In addition to Fraser and Weisz, the new sequel will also feature the return of John Hannah as Jonathan, the treasure-hungry and less-than-trustworthy older brother of Weisz’s character, and Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, the badass leader of the secret society of elite warriors known as the Medjai.
Kevin J. O’Connor, who played Benji in the first Mummy movie, is also set to return for the sequel. However, it’s unclear whether he’ll be back as Benji or another character. Other additions include Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.

Production kicked off last month, and it’s been great to see photos of Fraser and Weisz back in action. After so many years of wishing for this project, it still doesn’t feel real.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead will hit theaters on October 15, 2027.
Is The Mummy 3 Canon?
The success of The Mummy prompted a sequel, The Mummy Returns, but it would be almost eight years until the gang returned for a third outing. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor wasn’t nearly as well-received as the first two, especially as Maria Bello replaced Weisz as Evelyn. When asked if they consider it canon to their movie, Bettinelli-Olpin said, “Well, Rachel is in this one.“
“That should answer the question for you,” Gillett said.
I’d wager that nothing in The Mummy: Book of the Dead will outright conflict with Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but it just won’t be referenced. Although I wouldn’t put it past them to include a little meta-dig at the sequel.
