This week’s retro trailer takes us back to 1980 with George C. Scott starring in the chilling supernatural horror film The Changeling, directed by Peter Medak.
The story follows John Russell (Scott), a composer who loses his wife and daughter in a tragic car accident. Hoping to put his life back together, he moves into a massive, secluded mansion in Seattle, only to discover that the house is hiding some terrifying secrets.
Strange noises echo through the halls, objects move on their own, and a mysterious presence seems determined to get his attention.
As Russell investigates the haunting, he uncovers a disturbing mystery involving a murdered child, a hidden room, and a decades-old conspiracy. What starts as a traditional ghost story becomes something much darker as the truth slowly comes to light.
The Changeling is one of the great haunted house movies, and for good reason. Unlike many horror films of its era, it doesn’t rely on graphic violence or elaborate special effects to scare audiences.
I love this movie because it gives us an incredibly creepy atmosphere through unsettling sounds, long stretches of silence, and simple but effective supernatural encounters. There’s a reason that scene involving a bouncing rubber ball has stuck with horror fans for decades!
Scott also delivers a fantastic performance, grounding the supernatural mystery in genuine grief and emotion. The film helped establish a style of atmospheric ghost storytelling that would influence later horror movies like The Ring and The Conjuring.
More than four decades later, The Changeling remains a genuinely unsettling horror classic that deserves to be seen by anyone who enjoys a good old-fashioned ghost story.
