how to check an Instagram fundraiser is real

A child needs urgent surgery. A family lost everything in a flood. A young man’s medical bills are piling up after an accident. The post has a photo that’s hard to look at, a heartfelt caption, and a donation link. Your instinct is to help, and that instinct is a good one.

Unfortunately, it’s also the instinct fake fundraisers are built around. After disasters and in the middle of viral stories, scam appeals spread alongside genuine ones, often using real photos of real people who have never heard of the account asking for money in their name.

You don’t have to stop giving. You just need a few minutes of checking first.

Why fundraiser scams work

Most scams rely on urgency, and fundraising scams have it built in. Someone is suffering now. Asking questions feels heartless, and the amounts involved are small enough that people don’t think twice.

The scammers’ raw material is easy to find. News stories, public posts by grieving families, and photos from genuine crowdfunding pages can all be copied in seconds. Put those images on a fresh account with a new name and a new payment link, and you have an appeal that looks exactly like the real thing.

Warning signs in the post itself

  • The account is new, or was recently renamed, with few posts before the appeal.
  • The story is vague about where the person is, which hospital they’re in, or who is organizing the help.
  • Comments are turned off, or only show praise and “donated!” replies.
  • The payment goes to a personal account, a crypto wallet, gift cards, or a payment app’s friends-and-family option rather than a recognized platform or charity.
  • The urgency keeps escalating, with new deadlines and new emergencies each time you look.
  • The same story appears on several accounts with small changes to names or amounts.

Check the photos

Start with the images, because that’s where most fake appeals fall apart.

Save the main photo and run it through a reverse image search such as Google Lens. If it appears in a news article about a different person, in a different country, or from years ago, you’ve found the problem. Pay attention to dates: a “recent” emergency illustrated with a photo published long before is a strong sign of reuse.

If the reverse search finds nothing, that doesn’t mean the appeal is genuine. Cropping, flipping, or adding text over an image is often enough to stop a pixel-matching tool finding the original.

Check the person asking

Next, look at the organizer: the person who says they’re the patient’s sibling, the family friend, the local volunteer.

Their own photos can be checked too, by face rather than by file. If you’ve seen people recommend a facecheck id instagram free search for exactly this, it’s worth knowing what that involves. The Facial Recognition app is free to download on Android and runs face searches on a paid in-app subscription, comparing a face with public profile photos and public web pages. FaceCheck.ID is a separate, paid service. Either way, you’re looking for one thing: whether the organizer’s face belongs to someone with a different name and a different life.

Also check the account’s history. Does it have years of ordinary posts, real friends in the comments, and a connection to the place where the emergency happened? Or did it appear last week?

Check where the money goes

The payment route tells you a lot.

  • Recognized crowdfunding platforms generally verify organizers, require details about how funds will be used, and run fraud teams. Some offer refunds or protection if a campaign turns out to be fraudulent. Check the platform’s own policy before relying on it.
  • Registered charities can be checked against official registers. In the US, the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search lists charities that can receive tax-deductible donations. In England and Wales, the Charity Commission publishes a register of charities. Many other countries have equivalents.
  • Personal accounts, crypto wallets, and gift cards offer no protection at all. Treat any appeal that only accepts these with real caution.

If the post links to a crowdfunding page, open the page itself rather than trusting a screenshot. Check that the organizer named there matches the account asking for money.

Give in ways that still help

If you can’t verify a specific appeal, you can still help the cause behind it.

  • Donate through established organizations working on the same issue, such as a known disaster-relief charity or a hospital’s own fundraising foundation.
  • Contact the family through a trusted channel if you know them, and ask how they’d like to be helped.
  • Wait a day. Genuine fundraisers are still there tomorrow. Many scams are not.

If you think you’ve found a fake

  • Report the account to Instagram using the scam or fraud option.
  • If it uses a real person’s photos, try to let that person or their family know, so they can report the impersonation themselves.
  • If you’ve already donated, contact your bank or payment provider straight away and report the fraud to your national fraud-reporting service.
  • Report the campaign to the crowdfunding platform if one was involved.

Don’t let one scam put you off giving altogether. Check the photo, check the organizer, check where the money goes, and then give with confidence.
