Touchdown Ray Liotta in a starring position in Cocaine Bear was a really meta casting coup. The actor whose most well-known position was taking part in coke-trafficking-gangster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas could be taking part in a coke-trafficking crime boss in director Elizabeth Banks’s buzzy ursine thriller.
However hiring Liotta, who died in Might on the age of 67, proved to be way more than a nod to the seminal 1990 mob drama.
“I imply, I am simply so grateful that he blessed this film that he trusted me as a director,” Banks, the actor-turned-filmmaker who beforehand helmed Pitch Good 2 (2015) and Charlie’s Angels (2019), tells us in a brand new interview as she paid tribute to the late actor.
“I’m a feminine director. I needed to make a giant [movie that] has lots of motion and CGI, and it’s a really muscular, masculine form of a mission. And I’ve been advised by folks [in Hollywood], ‘I don’t know for those who can direct these issues as a result of I don’t know if male actors will observe you.’ And I say to that, ‘When Henry Hill follows you, you may make something you need.’ In order that was the reward that Ray gave to me. He gave me the arrogance to know that I can direct anyone doing something.”
Cocaine Bear’s premise relies on the very true story of an American black bear that ingested a duffel bag’s value of coke dumped within the Georgia wilderness when its drug-smuggling pilot made a crash touchdown. The movie imagines what might have occurred afterwards, as Liotta’s midwestern drug kingpin sends his son (Alden Ehrenreich) and affiliate (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) to the Peach State to retrieve the narcotics, whereas numerous locals within the bear’s neighborhood are terrorized by the coke-fueled animal.
Banks had beforehand co-starred with Liotta within the 2011 indie comedy The Particulars and satisfied him to come back aboard her movie.
“He was actually excited to do it,” she says. “He got here very joyfully to this mission. Very sport. Truly, after he learn the script, he requested for extra jokes.
“I knew Ray slightly bit from a mission we might finished a decade in the past, and I knew, initially, what a consummate skilled he was, that he was gonna come to set and he was going to be prepared, which he was. And that he was going to decide to the bit. I imply, some loopy issues occurred to Ray Liotta on this film. I do not wish to give something away, however he was totally dedicated to that stuff from minute one. In every little thing, from the wig he wore to the garments, he was simply so sport.”
“Ray was dope,” says Jackson (Straight Outta Compton, Godzilla: King of the Monsters). “Glorious trash talker. Nice individual to crack jokes with and to make chuckle.
“You’re simply form of watching a bit of Hollywood [history] do his factor. You find yourself simply watching the person work. … It’s an honor to be in [one of] his final movie[s].”
Cocaine Bear opens Friday, Feb. 24.
