Transformers’ Home Planet Was More Like Earth Than You Realized

One detail in Transformer One‘s trailer reveals that Cybertron is a lot like Earth. Directed by Josh Cooley of the Toy Story 4 fame, Transformers One is one of the most intriguing additions to the overarching franchise because, unlike most installments, it explores the Autobots and Decepticons’ origins. It unfolds in a timeline where Megatron and Optimus Prime are much younger and, instead of being sworn enemies, the two are allies. Another major difference between most other Transformers films and Transformers One is that it will only unfold on Cybertron.

This not only means the film will feature no human characters but also suggests it will explore the Transformers‘ home planet in ways the previous films never did. As its trailer also reveals, Transformers One will delve into its titular characters’ rich history while also closely portraying the pre-war-torn terrains of Cybertron. Interestingly, in these depictions of the Transformers planet, the film will also highlight how Cybertron and Earth are similar in more ways than one.

In its initial moments, Transformers One’s trailer only gives a glimpse of what is happening beneath Cybertron’s surface. However, as the central Autobot and Decepticon characters venture to the surface to battle their enemies, the trailer reveals the beautiful landscape of the planet. In the trailer’s scenes, Cybertron not only seems to accommodate a lot of flora but also has massive structures that hint at its history. What makes the planet even more visually stunning is its animal life. Although the trailer only briefly features deer-like creatures on Cybertron, the planet may likely have other kinds of fauna as well.

As trivial as this little detail may seem, Cybertron’s diverse wildlife holds immense significance in the franchise’s overarching storyline. It highlights how, even though Cybertronians appear significantly different from humans, their planet is similar to Earth. This explains why the Autobots move to Earth after the War for Cybertron and even adds a layer of humanness to the franchise’s titular characters. Most live-action movies in the Transformers franchise struggle to bring out the human element in their Autobot and Decepticon characters because of their heavy emphasis on action.

However, Transformers One seems to be doing an incredible job of bringing emotional depth to its characters. By showcasing how Cybertron accommodates its own ecosystems like Earth, the film is making its titular characters more relatable and clearly establishing why they are willing to fight for their planet. This added depth will also make Optimus Prime and Megatron’s eventual fallout in Transformers One more compelling.
