The winners of the RINGO AWARDS 2024

The winners of the 2024 Ringo Awards were announced last night at Baltimore Comic Con – with many winners being Ringo favourites and past recipients.

The biggest prior multi-award winner of the night was Stan Sakai who received the Best Letterer Ringo Award for the second consecutive year. Overall the Usagi Yojimbo cartoonist has now racked up seven Ringos since 2017 across numerous categories – including Best Cartoonist, Best Single Issue, Best Series, and Best Presentation in Design, and – of course – Lettering.

Another multi-award winner was Sean Phillips who received Best Presentation in Design two years in a row for Darwyn Cooke’s Parker adaptation books (last year for companion book Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition – Last Call). The artist is best known for his partnership with Ed Brubaker on multiple crime comic series and graphic novels – which have earned him wins in the Best Original Graphic Novel (2021, 2019) and Best Penciller categories (2019). At our count this year marks Phillips’ sixth Ringo for the shelf.

Tamra Bonvillain received her third Best Colorist Ringo Award and also the Best Single Issue or Story for their work alongside Tom King and Peter Gross on Animal Pound #1 (BOOM!). Meanwhile Mariko Tamaki received her second Ringo Award for Best Writer (the first since 2020). Rachel Smythe’s recently concluded, hugely popular Lore Olympus Webtoon series got its third consecutive Ringo Award win in the Best Webcomic category.

Bone creator Jeff Smith received 2 Ringo Awards last night – which we believe to be his first – in the categories Best Cartoonist and Best Humor Comic for Bone: More Tall Tales.

Formally known as the Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, they are now in their eighth year. The Ringo Awards are voted on by industry professionals with the 2024 edition being presided over by a judging panel which included Alan Gill (Ultimate Comics stores; NCComicon); writer, editor, educator Robert Greenberger; writer, artist, creator, adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, The Wrong Earth, Black); author, comics and games writer Sam Maggs (Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins, Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Southern Seas); and writer-artist Annie Wu (Two Graves, Dead Guy Fan Club).
