When my brother announced his wedding, it was as if a light reignited in my mother’s eyes. She’d been through so much—an Army veteran, a breast cancer survivor, and a widow since 2016, when we lost my father unexpectedly. My baby brother, the groom, had stepped into a protector’s role at that moment, taking our mother into his home and helping her through surgery and recovery, becoming her rock when she needed it most.
