HBO is closing to casting its new Severus Snape for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that HBO is eyeing British actor Paapa Essiedu for the role of Severus Snape in its upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Known for his acclaimed work in I May Destroy You, Essiedu has reportedly been offered the part, though it remains unclear if negotiations are underway.
In a statement regarding Esseidu’s casting, HBO told THR that, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Everything we know about HBO’s Harry Potter TV series
The Harry Potter series, set to debut in 2026, is one of the most high-profile projects currently in development at HBO. The show is aiming to reimagine J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizarding world for a new generation, with casting for iconic roles like Snape, Dumbledore, and Voldemort sparking significant buzz. While reports indicate that Mark Rylance is close to being cast as Albus Dumbledore, THR claims that the rumors linking Cillian Murphy to the role of Lord Voldemort are inaccurate.
No actors have been officially confirmed for the Harry Potter series, which aims to provide a more comprehensive adaptation of Rowling’s novels compared to the original film series. The series is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027 on HBO.
Alan Rickman famously brought Severus Snape to life in the Harry Potter films, delivering a performance that balanced the character’s stern exterior with his deeply emotional and tragic backstory. Snape is a pivotal figure in J.K. Rowling’s books, serving as both an antagonist and an unexpected hero whose loyalties and motivations are only fully revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer for the series, with Mark Mylod set to direct multiple episodes. The project is produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, with additional executive producers including J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
