After reports that it was in the works last year, Variety is reporting that A Different World sequel series has officially been given a pilot order at Netflix, a rare move for the streamer.
What do we know about the A Different World sequel series?
According to Variety’s report, the streaming platform is planning to shoot a pilot for the project this summer, to test the show’s tone and see the chemistry of its potential cast. The move is rare for Netflix, with this being one of the only pilot orders its ever given out to a comedy series.
The report also mentions that, despite the pilot order, Netflix has no plans to engage in the “pilot season” that most cable networks do, in which shows compete for a spot on TV.
No official cast members or information about the project has been announced as of yet. However, last year, details on the sequel series began surfacing, with reports noting the series would reportedly follow the daughter of Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), two characters from the original series.
Their daughter would also be attending Hillman College, the school that was the main focus of the original show.
A Different World originally premiered in 1987, and was conceived as a spinoff to the massively popular series The Cosby Show. The series originally starred Lisa Bonet reprising her role as Denise Huxtable, and followed her life as a student at Hillman.
Bonet left the series after the first season, however, and the show then focused more primarily on the relationship between Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Alongside Guy and Hardison, other stars in the series included Marisa Tomei, Dwann Lewis, Mary Alice, Loretta Devine, Daryl M. Bell, and Sinbad.
