AFI bring an era-spanning set to Brooklyn Paramount

Last week at Brooklyn Paramount, AFI put on another memorable show in a long series of them. This is a group that have never shied away from change, treating their fans to a diverse set of eras and side projects that fall in line with whatever is fueling them creatively. In the ’90s, their sound was rooted in hardcore, tearing through performances at 924 Gilman Street alongside Green Day, Operation Ivy, and Rancid. Throughout the 2000s, they adopted a darker, moodier bent that won them favor with mainstream audiences, most significantly on 2003’s Sing the Sorrow. They got experimental with synth-pop for 2009’s Crash Love and 2013’s Burials. As Havok said during the band’s AP cover story interview, “AFI fans who are fans of the music and not fans for just one period of time don’t know what to expect every time.”

During the evening, the band ran through an impressive and career-spanning setlist that paid tribute to all those past versions of themselves — featuring live rarities (“File 13” from Very Proud of Ya and the encore “Totalimmortal” off All Hallow’s E.P.), long-held favorites (“The Days of the Phoenix”), and brand-new tracks from Silver Bleeds The Black Sun… (“Holy Visions,” “The Bird of Prey”).

AFI continue their North American headline tour — their first full run since 2021 — with support from TR/ST, wrapping on Nov. 5 in San Diego. Check out the setlist and live photos from their Brooklyn Paramount stop below.
