The Mafia Nanny Vol. 1 collects the first twelve entries in the hit WEBTOON series. Created by SH00 and Violet Matter with colors by Rouusuu and backgrounds by Drawniels, the book is available now from WEBTOON Unscrolled. The fast-paced action comedy is easy to pick up and get into… although you may be surprised at how quickly you’ve run out of pages!
The Mafia Nanny Vol. 1
When Davina is a young child, her family is murdered by unseen rivals. Raised by her nanny, Bremerton, Davina matriculates at the the Elite Nanny Academy (ENA) to become a protector herself. Enter Gabriel Angelini, of the Angelini Mafia family. Gabriel’s child, Mikey, can’t keep quiet as his father makes the rounds gathering protection money.
Angelini approaches the ENA and specifically asks for Davina’s services. In fact, he insists on Davina, even when Bremerton — now the headmistress at the Academy — attempts to recommend someone else in her stead. Nevertheless, Davina is taken into service for the Angelinis. This is in part due to the fact that she has the ulterior motive of discerning more intel about her parents’ deaths.
But did Davina bite off more than she can chew? Mikey is an adorable little moppet in a cute tailored suit, but he’s surprisingly serious about the family business. While certain childlike characteristics do emerge from time to time, he’s equally likely to come across as the tiny Mafia boss-in-training he is. With a mind towards machination and a hard-to-kick chocolate milk habit, Mikey is more intimidating than your average babysitting charge.
Meanwhile, Davina learns that there may be more than meets the eye to Gabriel. Not that Gabriel isn’t easy on the eyes. But it’s just common knowledge that even when the underboss of a mafia family is fun to look at, he’s dangerous to trust. And that’s not to mention the mysteries surrounding Gabriel’s late wife and mafia don brother…
Classified intel
As far as the art goes, it is primarily focused on the characters and their expressions. The scenes when Davina activates “Nannymode.” are particularly enjoyable. Imagine if the Terminator had a “Nanny” setting, and you’ll have the right idea. It’s easy to root for Davina, who has a sympathetic backstory and clear motivations. And who wouldn’t want to see an adorable child like Mikey achieve some happiness (even if he is already a little made man)?
Finally, the adaptation from scrolling WEBTOON comic to physical release is well done – the action is easy to follow even though the story was originally released in a very different format.
