Netflix’s political drama The Diplomat has announced that Emmy-winning actors Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford will join the cast as series regulars in its upcoming fourth season.
The duo, known for their roles in The West Wing, previously appeared as guest stars in Season 3 which premieres October 16th.
In The Diplomat, Janney portrays Vice President Grace Penn, a character who ascends to the presidency following the unexpected death of President William Rayburn (played by Michael McKean). Whitford plays her husband, Todd Penn, who becomes the First Gentleman. Their characters’ complex dynamics add depth to the series’ exploration of political intrigue and personal relationships. They join series cast Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell.
This casting marks a reunion for Janney and Whitford, who previously starred together in The West Wing. Their on-screen chemistry as C.J. Cregg and Josh Lyman was a hallmark of the acclaimed series. Showrunner Debora Cahn, who also worked on The West Wing, expressed enthusiasm about their collaboration to Netflix Tudum stating, “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus [Sewell] … it’s an insane bag of candy.”
The upcoming season is expected to continue the series’ blend of political drama and personal storytelling, with Janney and Whitford’s expanded roles promising to add new layers to the narrative. Season 4 is set to go into production this fall.
