The Powerpuff Girls Halloween Special from Dynamite is set to debut on October 23, making it the perfect comic for the whole family this spooky Halloween season. Written by Amanda Deibert (Darkwing Duck) and illustrated by Cat Staggs (Wonder Woman ’77), the 40-page special is available for preorder now. Trish Forstner and Silvia De Ventura will also illustrate the covers along with Staggs.
Deibert and Staggs chatted with The Beat about the new book.
DEANNA DESTITO: How did you come up with the story for this one?
AMANDA DEIBERT: Halloween is SUCH an inspiring holiday and one our family loves so it was easy to let my imagination run wild. I thought it would be fun to let Cat play with different styles so the idea of Buttercup trying to create a horror comic within a horror comic gave us both a lot of room to play!
DESTITO: What is your favorite part about playing in the Powerpuff world?
DEIBERT: They are such fun characters! I adore the Powerpuff Girls AND the villains, so the whole thing is a joy.
CAT STAGGS: It’s a franchise I’ve loved for a long time. I enjoy how clever it is, and getting to draw them is such a career bucket list item for me!
DESTITO: Can fans jump in with this comic or do they need to read the other series too?
DEIBERT: It is totally a stand-alone! But read them all because they are fun!
DESTITO: Are there any new villains to add to PPG’s infamous rogues’ gallery?
DEIBERT: No, but there are tons of the gallery in here… and some may be drawn in a way you’ve never seen before.
DESTITO: Favorite moment in this story?
DEIBERT: I love the meta moments where we get pulled out of one story and into another. Cat CRUSHED it. The ending is my absolute favorite part.
STAGGS: I love all the Easter eggs we put in this one, and the Mojo Jojo pages were so fun to draw!
