Last night, October 22nd, Australians in Film celebrated the announcement of Andrea Solonge as the 12th recipient of the prestigious Heath Ledger Scholarship at an exclusive event held at Soho House, West Hollywood.
The event drew notable talent from the film and television industry such as, Melanie Lynskey, Simone Kessell, Phillip Noyce, and Jeremy Podeswa, all excited to witness the crowning of Australia’s next rising star.
Established in 2012 in memory of the late Heath Ledger, this scholarship has grown to become a globally recognized platform for discovering and supporting exceptional Australian acting talent. The evening reached its pinnacle when Solonge, known for her roles in “Time Bandits” and “Prosper”, was named the 2024 honoree. She was selected from a record number of applicants, continuing the legacy of Ledger’s commitment to nurturing new talent.
The scholarship prize, valued at $60,000, will provide Solonge with tools to further her career in Hollywood, including mentorship from Bella Heathcote (a former HLS recipient), as well as coaching, dialect training, and access to industry workshops. The package also offers financial support, including living allowances and professional services that will equip Solonge with a strong foundation in Los Angeles.
HLS judge and multi-award-winning actor Sarah Snook (Succession) praised the strength of this year’s finalists but noted that Solonge stood out for her “captivating depth and strength.” The event featured all six finalists—Charles Wu, Taj Aldeeb, Kartanya Maynard, Will McDonald, and Ezekiel Simat.
Solonge expressed deep gratitude for the honor: “This acknowledgment is truly special. Heath was one of the most transformative actors of his generation. To set foot on the path that he trail-blazed is an immeasurable honor.”
The Heath Ledger Scholarship has propelled past recipients into high-profile roles, with alumni like Rahel Romahn set to star in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Charmaine Bingwa (Emancipation), and Mojean Aria (Reminiscence).
Hollywood’s eyes are now on Andrea Solonge, and as the industry eagerly awaits her next move, it’s clear that the Heath Ledger Scholarship remains a powerful gateway for the next generation of acting greatness.
