Nearly three years ago, Harry Potter fan art of Andrew Garfield as a young Remus Lupin surfaced on the internet. Now, with the new HBO series coming out and a renewed interest in casting, the actor has finally responded to the idea of him playing the role of the beloved Hogwarts professor.
In a GQ reaction video, Garfield went on TikTok to reply to fan comments on content about him. While viewing an older clip of himself, a specific post caught the Spider-Man actor’s eye. A user simply stated, “REMUS LUPIN???” Garfield then revealed that he had only recently begun to watch the Harry Potter films, saying, “I’m very late to the game”. Coincidentally, he claimed he had just finished the third movie, Prisoner of Azkaban, where Lupin made his first appearance.
In an older interview with BBC, after theories swirled about Garfield being cast, he was asked whether he would play Lupin. And, like he does with any rumors, he answered in a very cryptic and non-committal way. “I will consider any role offered, how’s that?“
While HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter show has not officially announced who they will cast as Lupin, it’s unlikely that Garfield would be the one to take on the role. Since the show is basing each season off of one book, the werewolf won’t appear until season 3. In the books, Lupin is meant to be in his early to mid 30s. And, with Garfield being 42 years old, by the time season 3 comes out in 2028 at the earliest, he would be a little too old to play the character.
This might be disappointing news to fans who want to see him in the new Harry Potter series. However, it is also doubtful that anyone was really expecting it. Hopefully, regardless of who HBO casts to play the wizarding world’s iconic werewolf, he will be a perfect fit for the role.
