Blue Beetle is set to kick off the new DC Universe in less than a month. However, before Jaime Reyes gets his big break, he must prove himself against the most worthy adversary of them all: a Toyota Tacoma.
Blue Beetle is set to test Jaime Reyes mentally, spiritually, and physically. In his quest to control the titular scarab and protect his family, Jaime must face off against some truly tough foes, including Carapax the Indestructible Man and Victoria Kord. However, the DC Universe’s toughest threat comes in the form of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, a truck that can do everything the scarab can do, and then some. Check out the full comparison between the two below:
While the Blue Beetle has never met the Toyota Tacoma in the comics, it’s possible the truck serves as a reference to the villain Black Beetle who, much like the Toyota Tacoma, is just as strong and as fast as Jaime Reyes. The Toyota Tacoma could also be a reference to Chronos, a villain who can control time, much like the timeless nature of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. It’s unclear what role the Toyota Tacoma will play in the film alongside Victoria Kord and Carapax the Indestructible Man, but it may be bigger than any fan may think.
Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.
In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.
Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The full cast of the movie also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
Blue Beetle is currently scheduled to hit theaters on August 18, 2023. Stay tuned for the latest news surrounding the film.
