Earlier this year Katee Sackhoff, best known for playing Bo-Katan on The Mandalorian, tossed her hat into the ring to play Poison Ivy in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Now she’s convinced Karen Gillain has the role locked down.
Rumors of Poison Ivy appearing in a DC Universe project have been swirling since Margot Robbie was first cast as Harley Quinn. When the rumor flared up once more following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios, Katee Sackhoff expressed her desire for the role. However, now the Bo-Katan actress seems convinced that Karen Gillan will land the part:
“Listen, I saw Karen Gillan wants to play her, too,” Sackhoff told The Playlist. “And, like, she’s got a closer ‘in’ than I do, so I feel like that’s a given. I feel like I’ve got no horse in that race if Karen wants to play that character, but God, I love her. I can’t be mad at her. She’s fantastic, and I love her dearly, so I still would love to, for sure. I think that maybe I can play Poison Ivy’s mom. I can play Karen’s mom again. We can just do that again, and we can both play Poison Ivy. Like, different versions, maybe. You never know.”
Katee Sackhoff landing the role of Poison Ivy’s mom would certainly be a fun cameo along the lines of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne. While it’s nowhere near confirmed Karen Gillan would play Poison Ivy in the new DC Universe, James Gunn has confirmed speaking to her about a possible role in the DC Universe he’s building with Peter Safran. Though if either her or the Bo-Katan actress end up actually making it to the screen is something that can only be answered by time.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
