Brad Pitt is back in one of his most memorable roles, but Cliff Booth has traded his stuntman days for a very different kind of Hollywood job.
Netflix has released the official trailer for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the highly anticipated follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. The new film reunites Pitt with Tarantino, who wrote the screenplay, while David Fincher takes over behind the camera as director.
And if the trailer is any indication, Cliff’s latest chapter is darker, stranger and considerably more dangerous.
Set in 1977, eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the film finds Cliff no longer working as a stuntman and body double. Instead, he’s become a Hollywood “fixer”, the guy powerful people call when a problem needs to disappear and conventional solutions aren’t exactly an option.
According to Netflix, Cliff is splitting his time between jobs such as bartending and working as a projectionist while quietly taking on off-the-books assignments for Hollywood’s elite.
His latest job begins when talent agent Karen Crosby, played by Elizabeth Debicki, asks Cliff to help her client Charlie Peters, a television superstar played by Scott Caan.
Charlie is known for doing his own stunts, but there is clearly much more happening behind the scenes. Cliff soon finds himself pulled into a world involving Charlie’s wife Toni (Carla Gugino), former professional football player-turned-actor Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and a pair of mysterious gangsters. Murder, blackmail, theft and extortion are apparently all part of the job description.

One of the most intriguing things about The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is that the film isn’t simply recreating the world of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
The original movie was set in Tarantino’s alternate version of 1969 Los Angeles, where Cliff’s friendship with struggling actor Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) ultimately intersects with the Manson family.
This time, Los Angeles has moved into the late 1970s, and Cliff is navigating a Hollywood that has changed considerably.
Rick Dalton isn’t returning, and the trailer even makes a point of acknowledging his absence. Cliff’s old job as Dalton’s stunt double is no longer part of his life, forcing him into a new role where his particular combination of toughness, loyalty and willingness to operate outside the rules comes in handy.
Timothy Olyphant, who appeared in the original film as actor James Stacy, also returns. The ensemble includes Peter Weller, Corey Fogelmanis, Matt Groove, JB Tadena and Karren Karagulian.
Fincher Meets Tarantino
The film also represents an unusual creative pairing. Tarantino wrote The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, but Fincher is directing, giving the character a very different filmmaker’s lens for his next adventure.
For Pitt, meanwhile, the role is a return to the performance that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
And the new movie keeps the action firmly rooted in Los Angeles. Netflix describes it as a crime story filled with “violence, ambition, and desire” unfolding against the backdrop of 1977 Hollywood.
That combination makes the film one of the more intriguing movie releases on the fall calendar.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will open in IMAX theaters on November 25, where it will play exclusively for two weeks before arriving on Netflix December 23. It will be Netflix’s first movie to receive a global IMAX theatrical release.
