The upcoming MCU movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious web-slinger stories yet.
Packed with returning heroes, villains, and some surprising new faces, the film promises to push Peter Parker into darker and more grounded territory than we’ve seen before. Now, fresh details about the movie’s main villain and what causes Peter to break down are starting to surface.
We already know that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see Peter dealing with heavy hitters like The Punisher, The Hulk, and The Scorpion, with Tombstone also recently confirmed to appear. But who will serve as the movie’s true central antagonist has remained a mystery until now.
Film reporter John Rocha, who was the first to share news about Frank Castle and Bruce Banner’s involvement, revealed some new inside information.
“I’ve had sources reach out to me close to the production, and someone who was recently at a Disney presentation for the film.
“What I’m being told is that the main villain is a female shapeshifter. They’ve cast the person, but I’m not allowed to say who it was. Not sure if they’re the Chameleon or not, but they are a shapeshifter.”
Despite that, Rocha stressed that The Hulk and The Punisher are still the “main people” in the story. He also shared some interesting details about how Peter’s personal life will impact his mental state.
“Boomerang is also going to be part of this movie, and that MJ has a new boyfriend, which is what causes Peter to snap a bit and makes the movie a little more darker and grounded.”
That tracks with what we know of Peter Parker. The idea of MJ moving on with someone new could be devastating, and if Peter hasn’t fully healed, that emotional blow could be the thing that pushes him toward a more dangerous and unstable headspace.
As for the female shapeshifter, could it be the rumored role Sadie Sink is playing, or possibly the older female lead casting that was reported earlier this year? A gender-swapped version of Chameleon is one option, but another strong candidate is Shathra.
First appearing in the comics by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr., Shathra is a wasp-like creature who once disguised herself as a woman named Sharon Keller to torment Spider-Man.
More recent interpretations even positioned her as a powerful Multiversal villain tied to the Spider-Verse. Bringing her into the MCU could set up some seriously exciting future storylines.
Meanwhile, Jeff Sneider recently teased that Sam Raimi might end up directing Marvel’s Midnight Sons, though he seemed less certain about Raimi returning for an MCU-connected Spider-Man 4. That rumor still feels like wishful thinking, at least for now.
