Ahead of Bridgerton Season 4’s major turning point, the series’ creative team addressed the decision behind a significant change for one of its central characters. The showrunner explained why Penelope steps away from a defining role that has shaped the ton since the series began.

Why Penelope retired from being Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton Season 4
According to Netflix Tudum, in Bridgerton Season 4, Penelope Bridgerton retires from writing Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers in Episode 6 after concluding that her public identity has altered the column’s influence.
She tells Queen Charlotte, “Like you, I will always believe in the power of gossip. Since I have become known publicly, there has been a change. The power I hold over the ton is too great.” Penelope also states, “I’m no longer a wallflower, an outsider. I am a Bridgerton. I’m privileged to visit the queen. Whistledown takes up a space which makes it impossible to deliver good, true, fair gossip.”
Scrutiny within the ton intensifies after her identity becomes public, and her marriage into the Bridgerton family places new limits on her role. Her elevated status and direct access to the queen undermine the anonymity that once powered her commentary. As society now knows she is Lady Whistledown, both the flow of gossip and its reception fundamentally change.
The consequences of her writing further influence Penelope’s decision. After Virginia confronts her over coverage of an affair, Penelope recognizes the tangible harm caused by publication. She later tells Queen Charlotte, “For everyone in the ton, Whistledown functions just as this palace does for you. It keeps them trapped, watched, scrutinized. Knowing what it feels like to be so confined, would it not be pleasant to allow them to simply live their lives the way they wish? Without fear?”
Showrunner Jess Brownell explained the narrative direction: “Penelope went through such a giant growth arc last season. She’s not the powerless girl who needs Whistledown to take back her voice anymore.” Brownell added, “While she stands by everything she believes about gossip being information, gossip being power for the voiceless, she realizes that it’s time for her to stop being in that role.”
Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix.
