While NYCC’s comic book programming is leaving a lot to be desired at this year’s con, comic book sellers are still fighting the good fight to make sure the show stays true to its name. One of those sellers is Brooklyn’s own Bulletproof Comics, owned by Hank Kwon who is always up for a conversation and a recommendation. He’s always made sure the store has a big presence at the con, with guest signings and exclusive variants covers, and this year is no exception.
This year, Bulletproof is selling the new Iron Man comic, written by Spencer Ackerman and illustrated by Julius Ohta, before it even hits stores. Ackerman will be there throughout the weekend along with creators Deniz Camp, Roye Okupe, Brandon Easton, and Damion Scott.
Those looking for some unique art items, Damion Scott will be selling stickers, lithos, and a sketchbook depicting abstract portraits of some of the modern era’s most influential public figures. It’s a sight to behold. Each portrait holds so much detail, and they feature such impeccable composition work that it begs to be bought so that you can go over each one at your own pace.
Bulletproof has been one of the great survivors of the New York’s comics scene. Hank is always innovating to keep his store both on trend with market fluctuations and profitable with key changes in offerings to remain competitive (a big shift to manga has proven highly successful, along with a more focused approach to graphic novel sales over single issues).
During the pandemic, the store took to streaming for auctions that contained some of the more rare and valuable comics in stock. Hank continues the auction to this day, and it’s a highly anticipated comics meet up that brings the store to fans that might not have easy access to it and to those that just can’t get enough of the Bulletproof experience.
If you’re at NYCC this weekend, give booth #4000 a visit and enjoy the atmosphere. Hank is one of the few stores that manages to bring that same sense of community he nurtures at his store’s physical location (2178 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn) to the convention floor. You’ll want to spend time there to experience all the joy Hank brings to comics.
